TCU and BYU Vs mediocre to decent Opponents

I found this to be interesting and it gives me a measure of hope. Some games don't mean anything at all. Other games are Vs FBS teams in an AQ conference or at least mentioned as a candidate to be in one - or maybe comparable to a BCS cellar dweller.



TCU Vs Near BCS or BCS opponents:

They lost to Baylor and SMU. These are both very good teams.



Baylor is an AQ that is usually weak but only losing to teams like K state or A&M this year. We would have lost to Baylor in week 1 too and would be the dog Vs them today. Understandable loss.



SMU is rumored to become a Big East AQ team and has risen up under June Jones formerly UH coach in the Sugar Bowl season. They are having a solid year and have only lost to good teams. An understandable loss. SMU must have a key injury as their O was non-existent Vs So Miss last week, but prior to that - very solid. We would have been the dog at the time they beat TCU. But they beat TCU in Ft. Worth. Glimmer of hope.



They beat three teams that don't mean a thing. La-Monroe, Portland State, and New Mexico. BYU would likely have beaten these teams with Jake or Riley. These wins do not tell us anything about TCU that our win over ISU didn't tell about us. We can both dominate really weak teams at this point in the season.



They also beat AFA and SDSU.



AFA is rumored to get a Big East AQ invite and is having a mediocre season at 3-4. SDSU also beat

them. ND beat them. Boise State beat them. AFA nipped Navy and beat two overmatched teams, so it is not clear how good this TCU win was.



SDSU got brief mention as an AQ expansion candidate but apparently isn't one. They lost to Michigan and TCU. They beat WSU, AFA, and Army.



Glimmer. TCU is only 2-2 Vs reasonably competitive opponents.



BYU:

Lost to a solid AQ Texas on the road and a solid at the time, AQ Utah - but at home and badly. TCU might or might not have lost those - but understandable losses.



Beat AQ bottom feeder Ole Miss on the road, AQ expansion target UCF, AQ bottom feeder on the rise, OSU on the road, and two teams that might compete with an AQ bottom feeder - USU and SJSU. Toss out ISU.



BYU is actually slightly more proven and can win on the road. Both teams are improving with experience, but BYU has risen up with a new QB, and this game could go either way though we are the dog. I expect BYU to cover the spread and hope they win.

So Bib are you changing your mind here? You said in another thread that TCU's schedule was tougher's than BYU's schedule, but here you are saying BYU is more proven than TCU, glad you have come over to the other side. ;)



I will say TCU really hasn't been tested by good teams yet this year. The two games you give them credit for Baylor and SMU are both overrated. Baylor hasn't beaten a good team and in a couple of weeks will be irrelevant taking their normai spot in the football world, while SMU hasn't played anybody, even though they may finish with a good record they play in a crappy conference. I will agree they have gotten better under Jones, but using the Hawaii sugar bowl example only weakens your analysis because that Hawaii team has to be one of the biggest overrated teams of all time.



This is why I am thinking TCU is riding a bubble that is ready to burst at the hands of BYU, and hopefully it isn't my BYU bubble that gets burst.

Haven't changed my mind. Their near win over Baylor matches ournear win over Texas at that time with Texas spotting us a big lead by using a crappy QB. Their win over SDSU is better than any win we have. Their win over AFA is as good as or better than any we have. But they have not been tested as many times. That is what gives me a glimmer of hope. We don't know if they would have stumbled if they swapped out two fo their three cupcakes for Oregon State or Utah or SJSU. Glimmer of hope is all I get.
