Nelson On Pace to Shatter BYU QB Rushing Record

The carreer QB rushing record is held by Virgil Carter. Steve Young is in 2nd followed by Brandon Doman and then Nelson. If Nelson stays healthy - he will shatter it.



NOT A LONG LIST

BYU hasn’t had many quarterbacks with Riley Nelson’s skill set of running and passing. It’s a short list but Nelson has a chance to make some noise on the career quarterback-rushing leaders for the Cougars. In fact, he is sneaking up on former BYU quarterback and current offensive coordinator Brandon Doman’s mark on the list.

1. Carter, Virgil (1964-66) 1,225 yards

2. Young, Steve (1981-83) 1,084 yards

3. Doman, Brandon (1998-01) 632 yards

4. Nelson, Riley (2009-) 554 yards

I hope Riley lives long and prospers...AND shatters the record, giving birth to the new-age qb at BYU: the mobile qb (who can at least make most opf the throws). ;-)

I have little doubt, if Nelson stays healthy, he will be the all time QB rushing leader at BYU. I'd love to see him get a hundred yards on Friday.

Impressive. I actually really like watching him play now. Almost like you never know what's going to happen on each down. Will be a run, a pass to the flats, a QB scramble or Riley keeping the play alive to make launch a bomb down field.

I'm happy that he scrambles now and keeps looking downfield. His long balls have been looking good too. Most of his "ducks' have been when he is getting hit or has to really rush the throw. Otherwise he had some nice looking fairly long throws vs ISU.

As for TCU, I think we have a great shot at winning this game.

I do know one thing. I sure don't fret 3rd down anymore. I haven't seen a 3rd down since he took over that I didn't think we were going to get 1st down on.

So, how long until we hear "Personal foul, Intent to Deceive the Defense, #13 Offense. Play was called as a pass, but he ran instead. 15 yards from the previous spot, replay the down."

I hope nelson breaks the record, because it is always nice to see new standards of greatness set.



However, I don't want him to shatter the record. Hopefully, Nelson continues to evolve as a passer (like Young did) and runs less next year--but he is still a constant threat that teams have to prepare for.

Last time, when Max got penalized, it was a stupid call. I mean, you're trying to deceive the opponent! What the heck was that call for? :sulk:

Exactly. Watching him play is like a breath of fresh air on every down. He has envigorated the offense and I look forward to watching again.



BTW, his running ability and BYU's improved running game have really opened up the vertical offense. Despite what I thought due to Riley's throwing last year--obviously injury affected his throwing--he throws a pretty nice deep ball. Now let's go squash some horny toads!
