Nelson's role as starter on the line?

Found this to be interesting. Can't decide if Mendenhall really believes this? Maybe he knows that with a little pressure Nelson performs better? Maybe he has to say stuff like this to keep the Heaps family and Jake himself hungry and satisfied? I guess we'll see how it all pans out though. Maybe Mendenhall knows that Nelson has been very lucky the last two games.



Nelson plays in 3 games and every one of them has seen an improving and more confident BYU team. Why state that the QBs job isn't secure after what he's done? We all already know that Riley can't stink it up and keep playing.

This is just your classic "every position is up for grabs every week" coach speak. You've got to keep players working in practice. The coaches know this, the players know this, and unless something drastic happens, Nelson will still have the starting role the rest of the year.

I've got to believe that you're right on this. Especially with the seemingly fragile psych that is Jake Heaps. Have fun at the game for me Schmoe!

If Bronco finds himself in a game situation where he feels Jake gives BYU a better chance of winning, you will see Jake. Barring injury, hard to imagine that situation. But if Riley is stinking it up against ISU, I, NMSU, expect to see Jake. Riley is not likely to be in that situation.

I guess Nelson did just enough today to be named the starter next week? I dunno.

It's clear this team is Riley's and he's just a better QB in 2011.

The only game where Heaps could regain the starting role is Friday. I don't see that happening.

I don't think Heaps is good enough to regain the starting role. It would take an injury for him to be the starter. And after seeing him today, I think Lark needs to start getting a look from the coaches as a backup.
