Why Jabari should come to BYU

One word: Legend



What BYU offers is the chance to be a legend. If you go to Duke or Kansas and win a NC and are an all-american and whatnot, sure everyone loves you while you're there, but as soon as you're gone, the next big name recruit comes in, does the same thing and you get forgotten.



At BYU, if you can get us into the final four, you'll be remembered and revered FOREVER. I still hear people talk about when they saw Danny Ainge play, and I'll be telling my kids and grandkids about watching Jimmer. If Jabari led us to our first final four, you better believe he'd have people retelling his story to their kids and grandkids



Anything he can accomplish at a powerhouse school he can do here. Deep tourney runs, national awards, NBA lottery pick, etc. Him and Harrison could even lead us to compete for a National Championship if they live up to their potential. He has nothing to lose coming here.

Has to be on his mind. Course, if you're ESPN's #1 player you likely think you'll be a legend wherever you go.



I think it would be great to land Jabari, but the potential for an ego worries me. I think Rose can handle it, but it's a potential concern.

Maybe he should just go to Adams state, or southwest baptist. That way he could be a legend, a leader, AND still beat up on ewets AND be the bmoc, and ... and ... and ...

As much as I would love to see Jabari at the Y...You don't have a clue what your talking about!!! You don't think the guys that start for Duke or NC or Kentucky and compete for national titles don't become legends? You are just flat wrong. Christian Laettner who's been out of basketball for years recently formed a band of all stars and played a sell out game in Lexington. They hate him so much years later they still will pay to see him play and boo him. My cousin was a 3 time All American at UK and won a national championship in 1958. He was basically set for life, never really had to work a day of his life after that unless you count making appearances and signing autographs. He sits on several company boards around Lexington and is still after 50 years treated like royalty, and draws pay just to be there on the boards. You don't understand what being a legend is until you see how someone is treated around here if they have their jersey hanging from the rafters at Rupp Arena.



What can the Y offer Jabari? He can play in the WCC conference in front of high school sized auditoriums where no one will see him. If he's lucky he might get a sniff at the NCAA show as a 12-16 seed and be a one and done. If he's really good like the Y has one every 30 years or so he might get a shot at the pro's and some legendary fame, but nothing like they have to offer at Duke, NC, or Kentucky.

I do love the Y though and there are a lot of other reasons than fame and becoming a BYU legend that should interest Jabari to come to the Y.

I think KY Coug brings up a good point, but I think we're talking different things here. Players who go to Kentucky, Duke, NC, etc. definitely can enter the pantheon of legends through stellar play. I think the original poster was implicitly making the argument that it would be easier to enter the BYU pantheon than those of other schools.



Suppose Jabari goes to Duke (I'm not even sure if it's on his radar, but it's a good example.) If he plays a few stellar years, leads his team to the Final Four once, etc.that's great. But it really doesn't distinguish him that much from Christian Laettner, Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, Shane Battier, Carlos Boozer, Kyrie Irving, Kyle Singler, etc. And that's just in my lifetime and off the top of my head! On a person-to-person, respected-by-the-community level, sure, Jabari would get that anywhere if he got success. But if Jabari came to BYU AND lived up to the hype, who would he compete with in terms of long-term recognition? Jimmer, Ainge, Kresimir, and...that's really it. (And not enough kids know who Cosic is. It's sad.)



BYU's at a unique crossroads, however, where I really do think we have the coaching staff to develop his talents, the supporting cast to make him look good, a fanbase that can fill a big stadium, and provide national exposure. It's a good intersection of big-time enough to make a splash, small-time enough to be remembered as one of the top 3 or 4 all time in the program.



Of course, I think Jabari's a long shot for BYU as it is.



Dmcougar, you're right that BYUtv is hardly a replacement for ESPN or CBS Saturday game exposure, but if our team (or a specific player) gets enough buzz, people are going to watch. Jimmer had plenty of people on the East Coast looking for CBS College Sports (a channel also buried pretty deeply in most people's packages) at inopportune hours. Granted, Jimmer was (probably) a once-in-a-lifetime phenom, but if someone like Jabari came to BYU and had a Jimmer-style career, you bet people would stoop to watching BYUtv for him.

Maybe John Wall is a good parallel. KYcoug, I'm sure you're more in touch with this since I have no connections to Kentucky basketball, so if I'm totally off base, let me know. I just remember when John Wall was there, that's all I heard about that year. John Wall was everywhere, on ESPN all the time, the BMOC, everything. Then, just the very NEXT SEASON, it was all Brandon Knight. Kentucky goes to the final four and John Wall is forgotten.

To use your example John Wall and Brandon Knight were both one and dones yet they both represented UK very well. Don't think either rate having their jersey retired but you can bet when they are done with the Pro's they will always have a job in Lexington if they want, and will never have to pay for a meal in any restaurant they go to. That's just the level of veneration that comes with a program like UK. Rajon Rondo another one and done at UK did a clinic this last year for kids and it was sold out to the point they had to open up several more sessions and they were all sold out as well, and all he did was come out and put on a shooting display for 10 minutes. The challenge for Jabari is will his talent grow to the next level of competition and is he better off in an environment like Duke, NC or UK where the team is full of blue blood 5 star McDonald All-Americans and excel there or maybe get lost in the shuffle, or would he be better off in an environment where he's the big dog and everyone feeds off him for 4 years. I guess ultimately it's hard to say which path is easier/better, or even which level of legendom is more desirable.
