If you add Doman's starts in 2000 against 5-7 New Mexico and 4-7 Utah, Doman faced opponents with a combined record of 77-106 (.421).

It should also be noted that Doman left the Hawaii game injured, and wasn't fully healthy for the Louisville game either.



It also shows that good QB play is good QB play regardless of opponent's strength. If you're playing well, you're playing well. It's kind of insulting to the QB to suggest they only reason they're playing well/better is the level of competition dropped (Heaps in late 2010, Nelson in 2011). No one thinks Detmer wasn't a very good QB in 1991 when they started 0-3 against Florida St, UCLA & Penn St until the level of competition lessened with UTEP, New Mexico, Utah St & Hawaii.

Oh really. I don't recall every game, but I do recall barely nipping a struggling Mississippi State game and being behind late even before Staley broke his leg on the final drive. Then UH humiliated us followed by someone else whipping our butts in a Bowl game without Staley.



We weren't in the Big 12 - so I am sure that schedule had the usual 8 or 9 WAC / MWC type fodder.



Don't get me wrong - that was one of our best all-time teams until Staley got injured - but we weren't beating powerhouse teams.



He played some teams better than USU, SJSU, and OSU - but a lot about the same and probably a worse one in there somewhere. And he had some starting experience to end the prior year and was prepped in the off-season to start.



I am not saying Nelson = Doman. Too soon to judge. Ask me at the end of 2012.
