CougarCorner Mid-Season MVPs

Time to vote on your mid-season MVPs.

Due to space constraints, if you want to choose other for special teams, you'll have to not vote for any special teams and just put them in the comments.

Just so everyone knows, I started this thread originally, but didn't think to include a poll, very smart, thanks for making my original thread much better.

Special teams is tough...Hoffman gets the credit for accomplishing what we haven't been able to do in 13 years, but seriously. Did you SEE the hole they opened for him? I think anyone on CC could have taken that one back for a TD. He literally had HALF THE FIELD open to him on that blocking scheme which, give him credit for seeing it, but I almost want to give as much credit to David Foote who on the fake punt took it 20 yards around the left side for a converted 4th down. I think that run stood as our longest run from scrimmage for the first 4 games.

Yes, this was Cougarpoke's thread and idea, I'm not trying to take credit for it or anything, just adding a poll to his thought process!

Matt Reynolds for offense. He's done a nice job. Has he given up a sack or hurry all year? Nelson's been a spark, but without MR, we likely lose to Ole Miss, and USU and Ore St become much dicier.



KVN for D. Impressive. Even if he ran like an ostrich on his pick on Saturday.



Taking nothing away from Hoffman, but I'd have voted for Riley Stephenson on Special Teams. With the exception of 1 shank, he's been very good on punts.

Isn't it curious that Heaps is not on the list, nor does anyone give him serious consideration. In August, I would have bet the farm that he would be blowing people away, instead he's mostly a dud. I hope he's great yet, but Riley will keep his job if he keeps playing like he does.



Defensively the stars, so far are all linebackers, but somebody like Putnam could end up being a dominating force on the DL.

I don't think it's curious in the least. His play was very poor, and nowhere near advertised, hoped for and frankly should have been.

Slippery slope. If the award was least sucky - Blue could probably deal with this award better. He can be pretty black and white and I am going to guess that this is his way of saying the offense is awful or horrible.

I believe I voted for Alisa, because I think the increased running game has been very important, but I can mostly agree with BlueIsBetther that no one on offense has really been an MVP.



I really only think one person on the team has played up to "Most Valuable" standards all year, and that's Van Noy. If Nelson had started at the beginning of the year, and had he played as well as he has against, in my mind, weaker athletes as a whole, then I would say he could be an MVP.

This isn't a Heaps thing. There isn't a player that has played consistently good enough on offense to be the most valuable player in my mind.



If my life depended on giving a name, I would say Austin Holt or Matt Reynolds have been the most reliable, consistently good players on our team. But Holt isn't getting the ball enough to be considered - unfortunately - and M. reynolds has played pretty good, but not phenomenal.

Matt Reynolds, really? He can't even hold a block for four seconds. Austin Holt really? He has all of nine catches, zero touchdowns and no game with more that two catches.



Riley Nelson is clearly the MVP of the offense and it's not even close. Alisa wasn't involved in the running game until San Jose St. While he has made a difference, the running game was already on the uptake when he emerged (127 yards vs UCF and 200 yards vs USU.)



Riley has been extremely consistent. Anyone who can't see that is being purposefully obtuse.

Most valuable.....as in the player who has been most valuable to the team. Your MVP doesn't even have to be "valuable," just more valuable than anyone else on the team. Your deflection is the same as saying, "I can't say which is cleanest, because they are all dirty."

Offense: Nelson and it's not even close. The offense has been night and day since he got there. He's elevated everyone around him and the entire team has been better since the second he took over full time.



Defense: KVN has won a game for us, Ogletree has been a HUGE force. They're both amazing athletes.



Special Teams: I'd also like to vote for Stephenson. But Hoffman's td probably gets him the mid season award. I mean, a run like that only happens once every 13 years at BYU.

MVP doesn't have to go to "best" or "top player" it's the player who is most valuable. There are lots of great players that never elevate their teams. If there ever was an easy choice, it is this one. MR played in the games where BYU looked terrible. RN's emergence coincided with the recent "better" BYU football. Pretty easy to see if you step back a little and examine it. When was the last time a tackle got MVP in the NFL? :)
