Cody Hoffman's Potential

Hoffman just conintues to impress me. It seems like there is nothing that he can't do.



We like to talk about the ceiling for Riley and Jake, but what about Cody?

Cody Hoffman is alway going to be limited by lack of breakway speed. On the bright side his is a tall, athletic reciever who catches the ball high in tight coverage. I think he will become more consistent in time but I don't seem a superstar in the making.

I was finally able to watch some videos of the games. Hoffman seems to be able to get open and catch the ball. He really ripped Oregon State. I don't see much limit on him. He may be a 6'4" Phil Odle.

He had enough speed to take a kickoff to the house. If you've got that and good route running with his size and hands, then there's no reason he can't be a superstar.

Name the top 10 receivers of all time, and tell me how many of them were burners with "breakaway speed."



Breakaway speed is overrated and is probably a tertiary, at best, consideration of how good a receiver is.

Randy Moss is the only guy who comes to mind of being a burner.

Calvin Johnson ran a 4.35, which is pretty fast. On the other hand, Larry Fitzgerald is 4.5-ish.

The greatest receiver of all time ran a 4.7, just saying.

Whatever speed Hoffman is going he doesn't run away from very many dbs. Usually they are right there. He just catches the ball over them.

There is 40 speed, and then there is game speed. 40 speed is fun to talk about, but game speed matters most. Look at Collie. Dude has great game speed, but is no 4.3 40 guy. Gotta be able to carry your pads and still have burst. So based upon that, Hoff and Apo both will be just fine. Add to it that most burners are not 6'3 or 6'4. The key is learning to use your frame to create separation and make catches in traffic. Hoff is getting good at it. Apo still needs more time to improve on that skill. BUt both will be playmakers for us for the next few years.
