Not One Week At A Time (This week)

We play Idaho State this week. They got blown out by Weber State. They are not a good team. They are not Appalachian State. They are not even Sacramento State.

Do not waste more than one day practicing for Idaho State. Spend the majority of this week and all of next week practicing for TCU.

We could line up in a base defense against against Idaho State and react to what they are doing and stop their offense. We could run the same running play on offense and beat them by 40. In fact don't even call plays, just have Riley go play backyard football. Everyone run around until you get open and if no one is open Riley takes off.

This should be a good week to get a head start on TCU as well as let our banged up players rest. Almost as good as a bye week, but not quite as good. Jordan Pendelton should not play in this game even if he is healthy. Fuga should not play in this game. Riley shouldn't play more than 2 quarters. Heaps shouldn't play more than one quarter. Lark should play at least 1 quarter. Lamb should play the majority of the second half. Edwards should see some TE time.

Agree. I haven't felt this overconfident since about 1985 when #7 or so BYU went to play winless UTEP and didn't even have Kozlowski and Bellini dress up so they could heal nagging injuries and BYU became UTEP's one and only win that entire season. It brought out conspiracy rumors about UTEP tapping BYU headphones and created quite a buzz and embarrassment.

That was the last time I was this confident about a game.

Maybe the coaches can trick the players into thinking they are preparing for ISU so they don't think they don't need to come prepared to play.

Hopefully we put ISU away very early and play lots of scrubs.

Yes, some players can be rested and allowed to heal this week, but BYU is not good enough to take anybody for granted. The most important thing about actually playing this game is it is a week BYU's secondary can learn to play pass defense. ISU throws every down (almost), so it will be a good game for DBs and safeties to improve their cover skills.

It will also be a good game to get some playing time for those guys who don't get to play much, some backup OL and DL players, receivers and TEs. Another game like OSU and BYU would be out of scholarship players. So take nothing for granted, use every down to learn and improve. Yes, TCU is a different story, but if we lose to ISU and beat TCU, what's the glory in that?

Bronco's comments this AM were telling. Essentially, they are going super-light in practices this week and may not even put on pads until Saturday.

He said all the right things about ISU, but his comments about the practice plan for the week were telling about his real perspective on ISU.

They should throw in some random stuff as well. Have the scout team offense run out there for a series with Matt Marshall running the triple option/wish bone. Have Lamb run the wildcat multiple times. Have Riley running the option a lot. Use weird alignments with the offensive line including splitting them out in the daffy duck formation, etc.

If we are doing stuff like this that we have absolutely no intention of ever running again, TCU still has to waste time practicing for it...

Word. This could be a HUGE upside for independence. This is better than a bye week in that:

1. You still get reps against an opponent who is going full speed

2. You can rest any/every player that needs some time to heal

3. You can try new formations to see how they work against a live opponent, if they work, great, add them to mix, if not, great, you still get the "W" and your next opponent has to waste practice time getting ready for it.

4. You accumulate very little bye-week rustiness because you still played full speed (if even for just a quarter or two).

5. The fans get to see a lot of fun plays and/or players that don't normally get much PT.

This could be a very nice tool to use strategically before we play a quality opponent late-ish in the season. I like it.

I want to them do a wildcat formation and give it to Ziggy Ansah. They better let him play the whole 2nd half. He will get us out of 113th in sacks ;)

He's hurt. Leg injury. Hopefully back soon.

A Gimpy Ziggy. They'll NEVER expect that. he'd still get a first down. Cast and all.
