Did scheduling just get harder?

So far, there have been two notable developments in this "second wave" of conference realignment.



-A better picture of the teams the Big East intends to invite.

-A consolidation of CUSA and MWC, presumably for better bowl access



Which means the following:

-There is a very strong chance Navy will join the BE. There is also a chance Army will as well. The number of Independents drops to 2-3.



-BSU could realign. By the terms of our agreement, that could allow them to exit our long-running series.



-If CUSA/MWC gets BCS access (which I doubt, but it's possible), OOC games become less important to the two best non-AQ conferences. Big-time non-conference match ups could become a lot less important.



-With less teams on the outskirts of the FBS, conferences might have stronger incentive to discourage post-September OOC games.



I'm enjoying independence, but unless we can get some sort of long term assurance that scheduling will continue to be feasible in the changing football landscape, I'm starting to fear that life without a conference might be untenable. I'm okay with playing 4 WACs/Sun Belts/FCSs a year, but if MWCs and CUSAs become hard to book, and if our best nearby teams jump ship for the BE, we could be in a sticky situation.

All pretty much true except Army told Big east no - they said Conf USA was even too hard for them to compete and that is why they went independent and intend to stay independent. AFA and Navy probably will go. Boise State will likely go - they have become a play any one any where team lately - which will come back to bite them in 2012, but they will go unless the Big 12 offers them a gig. The fact that the Big E is going to offer, assuming they actually do next week, will indicate that BSU to the Big 12 is off the table. The fact that BSU is still hedging and Big Easy has not formally offered yet, may indicate that BSU is still trying to do something else, like Big 12, first.



SEC needs to decide what it is going to do about a 14th team. Then things will fly into place after that. If they / MO don't get it figured out soon, some moves will start happening by people who are too undertain to wait it out. But if Big E only slaps a dime on the exit fee, BSU could sign up, and back out without ever going through with it like TCU did, should Big 12 come calling later. Big E needs to deepen their resolve if they want to see stability and me thinks a couple more are going to pay the dime and bail before they bump the dime up to a quarer or 2.

The only way we can say scheduling just got harder is because Navy would no longer be independent.



Everyone else was already in a conference, and we don't know if the new Big East will be playing 8 or 9 games or if they'll put restrictions in place like the PAC did.



So for now, scheduling is marginally harder to the extent we wanted to schedule Navy. Otherwise, it could just as easily be a non-factor for BYU as to the other teams.

So you are saying we are assisting in their negotiations due to our recent experience. LOL

Our friends in the Big Country will hopefully sympathize with our plight and throw us a bone if we need help - good thing we didn't burn any of those bridges - oh, oops, what's that smoke over there by that bridge?

I'm gonna go to the forums for UConn, Cincy, Louisville, USF and that other "not UWV" school and start covertly shilling the virtues of independence.

Won't work. They are addicted to the forbidden fruit of the BCS.
