They've been talking about it for a while. last year there were some rumblings that they were gonna have a MWC/C-USA cross-championship game and the winner would have access to a shared AQ bid.

Although that's a lot more tantalizing when BSU, TCU, AFA, UCF, ECU and Houston are in play. May not be the case anymore. Between the two conferences there's enough talent for a decent conference, but who knows if that talent will stick around or jump ship.

Heh, reading the press release, it sounds like their goal is essentially to be a 22-team conference.

That's either the craziest thing I've ever heard, or the dumbest.

So do they make 2 mixed divisions? How would a season look? SD could have 4 conf games in the east and central time zones? Sucky. I feel really bad for cusa teams that have to go to laramie.

Sooooo glad we got out of that sinking ship. That's gonna be a nightmare.

Also, there is no guarantee of a BCS game. Note that the BCS has not said "Do this and you will get an automatic invite." Instead, they are doing it and foolishly thinking that the BCS would take one of their one loss or two loss champs as an auto bid (a no loss team probably gets in as an at large anyway).

This is all wishful thinking, especially the more that good teams get poached by other conferences.

If the goal is resisting super-conferences, this is not the way to do it. The super-conferences are obsessed with grabbing TV markets, large alumni bases & milking research dollars. They have zero regard for the quality of undergrad education, controlling travel costs & preserving rivalries.

This proposed merger is trying to play on the terms of the emerging super-conferences. If the the SWC/Big 8 merger couldn't work, why will this?

Get back to regional conferences. People say the SWC failed because it was too TX-centric. Seems like it lasted 80 years before being crushed by scandals.
