Independence - Solution for motivation/bowl game

One of the main complaints about independence is having nothing to play for after an early season loss as there is no conference championship. One solution would be to modify our bowl agreement to not be contracted to one bowl game but have at least three tiers of games.



Tier 1: BCS - We get a BCS invite we get out of any other bowl agreements. (We already have this in our current bowl agreements.)



Tier 2: Holiday Bowl/Alamo Bowl type of a bowl game. If we are ranked in the top 15 of the coaches poll we receive an automatic invite to the bowl game. If we are not ranked in the top 15 the bowl has the option to select us if they want.



Tier 3: Armed Forces Bowl/Poinsettia Bowl type of a bowl game. If we are bowl eligible and are not going to Tier 1 or Tier 2 bowl game we are automatically invited to this bowl game.



I know this would be more complicated to lock down, but ESPN owns a lot of bowl games and it seems like we should be able to work out this type of an arrangement with two of their bowl games. This would give an 11-1 or 10-2 team a respectable bowl game to strive to reach. With all of the conference movement there will be bowls that should want a top 15 BYU team over the 3rd place Big East team or 5th place Big 12 team.

What are we paying the Holiday/Alamo/Armed Forces/Poinsettia Bowls to hold bids for us?

For me, part of the fun with the bowl system is NOT knowing wich bowl game you'll be going to until the last game or so. Knowing in advance, particuarlly for a sucky bowl...just sucks.

It's a great idea for BYU but I don't think it's a very good deal for the bowls and I don't know why they'd agree to it.

When we were in the MWC we knew there was a tier--Vegas got 1st choice etc., but I love the idea of a tier for independents us.

The Holiday used to get the #3 Big 12 team, but since the Holiday is now stuck with the #5 Big 12 team (#6 on the years the Big 12 gets two in the BCS) out of 10 teams, having an option to invite BYU would make sense for the Holiday Bowl. The Holiday Bowl is just above the Meineke Car Car Bowl in the Big 12 bowl hierarchy.



An independent BYU has no shot at getting the Alamo Bowl to agree to anything because they've taken over the Holiday Bowl's matchup of #3 Big 12 against #2 Pac Ten12.

Please elaborate. Why would a mid to top tier bowl not want an 8-10 win BYU team? Why would a lower tier bowl not want a 6-7 win BYU team? We bring fans to the games. The bowls would have other options in place (just like they do now) if they don't "get" BYU due to number of wins.

It was somewhat sarcastic, but at the same time, those other bowls don't have to worry about having bowl teams. They know the Big 12 will be able to fill their slots. It would be great, but you're asking four bowls to hold a slot in the event BYU might be eligible for that bowl. It would be very tough to for BYU to work because we don't have a team lined up behind us to fill any bowls we don't go to.

ESPN owns a lot of them but they are pretty much all under contract to different conferences. Can anyone name any decent bowls that aren't under an existing contract to one of the conferences. Basically the same reason we couldn't get a decent bowl when we were in the MWC. I like the idea but I'm not sure why a bowl would give up an affiliation with a BCS conference when the contract expires for the Y. Maybe there are some aligned with the Big East that would take a look.

Here's the perfect solution. We want to be like ND, right? Well, they are tied into the Big East bowl agreements, because that's where their other sports play.



So all we need to do is weasel our way into the WCC bowl arrangements! Problem Solved!
