"Sources tell Orangebloods.com byu is no longer a candidate to join the big12 because byu wants to be independent."

And let the rebellion begin. Just wait and see how full our stadium is next year. We won't sell out a single game next year. This is bad.

If this is true, which you never know, but it looks that way, then you are going to have ALOT of donors hop ship and a lot of rabid fans lose interest.

I am surprised actually. I was quite certain that indy was temporary, with chance to stay if it worked out well, on way to big12.

Chip is still chip but this and the espn announcment that big12 staying at 10 this year are pointing in the direction of byu as independent.

still wouldn't be surprised though to see missouri leave before season is up. We will see though.

I am just going to see how things play out. I have to be honest though, I feel like being in the Big12 would have been better for our program than independence and I am bummed we appear to have squandered our chance.

If this is true, then I agree with Ben Bagley who I usually ignore because he is a freaking ute. BYU had better offer an explanation. Maybe we should find out Tom Holmoe's email address and send him some thoughts.

The thing is, there is a very strong possibility that independence allows us more exposure than being a part of the Big 12. And if that's the case, this move would not surprise me at all. I mean, cmon, the San Jose State game was on ESPNU (which everyone gets). The Big 12 regional contracts would likely not broadcast a number of our games (Iowa State, Kansas, Missouri, Baylor) nationwide. I think BYU is really after exposure, and it's hard to argue with the exposure we're getting right now.

Yes exposure is nice but if we keep having a home schedule where the highest profile game is against utah and then we play idaho, idaho state and new mexico state to round out or schedule, season ticket holders are going to quit buying tickets. Our home sched this year is pathetic.

Interesting the Chip tweeted that. It definitely puts pressure on BYU. The thing Texas doesn't understand is that BYU really is not about the money. While this will seriously damage byu athletics, it wouldn't change the mind of the BOT who was probably hoping it was stay quite that they turned it down.

I am over it. I am disappointed. I think Big12 is better than Indy. I think this decision will end up hurting the program significantly over time. Hope I am wrong. I will support the BOT for obvious reasons, but I am disappointed given the perspective an information that I have on the situation.

Yeah it sucks this year but it'll get better. Texas will be there in 2 years. Boise State and Notre Dame will be there regularly. Not saying it'll be great but it'll be better then this year.

Something else, that TH knows that we don't is what their schedule is like in the pipeline. We only know a few games scheduled for the next few seasons.

The opponents that we don't know could be terrible, which would suck and would make "turning down the Big 12" (if it really happened) even more disappointing.

Or the opponents could be good to great, which would help make sense of the situation.

On a side note, for those BYU fans lucky enough to go to home games...quit your whining. I've got to wait for BYU to schedule a northwest team and then drive 3-5 hours to get there.

To most BYU fans (there are many more than the 64K that fit in LES) it means more to have games on ESPN and available on BYUTV than that BYU has a great home schedule.

Yeah I think so but they've obviously picked up a lot more than that so far this year and the ratings haven't been bad. There's no reason to think that unless we are completely awful, they'll be broadcasting significantly more than 4 a season.

We got texas in a couple years, we get 2 for 1's with Notre dame. The bottom line is, we are seeing schedules filled with crap teams for the forseeable future with hardly any movement in the long run. Going to the big 12 would get teams like OU, Texas, KSU ect here every other year. I was only in favor of independance because we would be able to see BYU play on espn every week, with the hope that the big 12 would come calling in a few years. Just because it only took them 12 months to come calling doesn't change my opinion that the Big 12 is where we should be. How is the admin going to explain to Coach Rose that instead of taking an offer to move our basketball team into a great conference like the the big 12 he is going to have to recruit players to come play in front of 3500 seat stadiums all year.

One of the criticisms that we had to deal with when we went independant was "arrogance" well, I think a real case can be made for that now. BYU is NOT Notre dame of the west and we would be much better off in a conference and the fact that the big 12 is one of the best overall conferences in the country just makes it a lot worse that we turned it down. All of my comments depend on it actually being the case that we told the big 12 "No thanks, we like being independant".

Sort of really pissed even know it was obvious the past few days that this was coming, if any of you really think independence is better a better option overall than big 12, then you're just flat out wrong. Not that I want to see Dave Rose go, but if I were him why wouldn't I? Obviously no respect for some of our other sports programs. It's like the interview that Wrubell did a few years ago with the Wake Forest coach right before the Wake Forest game here. He said that teams like Wake Forest probably aren't going to be making the trip all the way out to Provo anymore because it really doesn't make much sense. I'm sorry but BYU isn't as big as we as fans think they are. They're a team that in either football and basketball can beat you even on down years, why take the chance of coming to Provo Utah when people and all the sport bias expect you to beat BYU and at the same time there's a really good chance that you're gonna lose, besides some mediocre money, it's a pretty much a lose lose situation for big name teams to come to Provo. I'm thinking of a very strong four letter word followed by BYU right now, and that describes how I feel.

This isn't a huge revelation.

It's a bummer, but in my opinion it's not worth losing your fandom over. But evidently some reasonable minds disagree with me.

I will not lose my fandom over it, I could never root for utah state or the utes. Having said that, I don't have to buy season tickets to watch Idaho state and new mexico state every year either. I can sit home and watch it on espn since that is what the administration wants anyway.

That's fine.

I just feel like we're comparing BYU's current schedules to something they never had before. I think 2013 provides more to be excited about than most years in terms of home games. It pales in comparison to the Big XII, but it's still pretty solid.

Not surprised one bit.

Bronco has said his preference would be to stay independent on multiple occasions. BYU/Mormons tend to have a larger than average view of ones' self and prefer to be a big fish in a small pond.

I'll still watch. Fans will still fill the stadium. There will be some mad boosters, though, and rightfully so. Our fate is tied more than ever to our performance on the field as we will never sniff a BCS bowl as an independent unless we run the table, which isn't happening anytime soon.

So, I give BYU sports another 10 years of existence. I thought they'd go 20 more, but this decision has cut BYU's timeline in half.

If the team plays anything like they have in year one of the 8 year contract with ESPN in years 2-8, ESPN will not be signing up for another go round. Scheduling games after the first four weeks will be a nightmare with the Pac 10 and Big 12 not playing OOC games after the first 3 to 4 weeks of the season. We already don't schedule Big 10 teams, and I'm sure they aren't looking at going OOC in late October or any of November. The SEC and ACC play games OOC then, but it's usually FCS opponents or regional teams. Well, maybe they will schedule us, since we'll be pretty close to FCS at that point.

We get no good home games. If exposure means playing all the good games on the road, it will wear down the program, and give no incentive for people to buy season tickets, since the best games will be on the road and on TV.

We will start losing more LDS kids to Utah and other BCS programs. I don't think being in a BCS conference would necessarily increase our recruiting pool, but not being in one will hurt.

I see Holmoe leaving, because I'm sure he sees the writing on the wall. Very similar to when Rondo left in protest to changes that were being made above his head. Rose will leave within 2 years. Bronco may stay, but he's sick of the other stuff going on anyway, he could leave too.

This whole situation rings of what Pres. Samuelson said when Bronco was hired. "We hope you understand what we're doing here, but if you don't we don't really care." I think their apathy will be met with equal amounts of apathy.

Could that be, "LOVE"? :D

I feel your frustration. But I think, as some have stated previously, independence may be our best option due to exposure which, as we all understand is one of the main reasons for going indie. Anyway, try not to get too p!$$3d off about it...nothing a good round of golf can't resolve. :D

Bronco has been supportive of the administration's decisions, but has said today that he'd prefer to join a conference if it would mean BCS access.
