Just Admit It

This goes for everyone--pro-Heaps, pro-Nelson, pro-Just-win-Baby:

If you thought Riley Nelson wasn't a D-1 quarterback and couldn't throw the ball 10 yards and was the suckiest suck that ever sucked, just admit you were wrong.

If you thought Jake Heaps was the source and root of all our offensive troubles (and more specifically second half woes) and therefore was the suckiest suck that ever sucked, just admit you were wrong.

Just because you took a position one-week ago doesn't mean your opinion can't change based on increased observation and an expanded data set. To refuse to hedge any ground because you are worried your anonymous online credibility might take a hit makes you look even dumber than the SJSU game made you look, and to make matters worse, it has turned this forum into the locale of some of the pettiest spats on cyberspace today.

I think everyone needs to relax and admit that Saturday night's game proved everyone a little right, and everyone a little wrong. I know I put too much blame on Heaps for our ineptitude in second halfs (halves?). To see people staunchly refusing to hedge because they committed so heavily to a pre-SJSU position is absurd. We know more today than we knew Friday, and it won't hurt you to admit it. I'll actually respect your opinions more in the future if you do.

I have already confessed my sins on multiple threads. Although I have no direct evidence that Nelson is also a point-shaver. ;-)

BTW--this was not directed at any one (or more) poster(s) in particular. I just got off work and the whole vibe of the football forum since last night really bugged me.

I also have no direct evidence that Heaps is also an arm-pit shaver. :gross:

I admit nothing. I came on this board the day after the WA game 2010 and said that Riley Nelson should be given the ball because he ran the offense better then Heaps and was roundly criticized. I pointed out every flaw in Heaps game all last year to severe criticism, in fact about half of my 1200 posts last year was defending my opinion that Heaps was slow on his reads and was throwing too hard and not on time and that was why all the recievers were dropping the ball. I also stuck to my opinion that Brandon Doman was the problem with the defenses adjusting to our Offense and stopping it in the Second half. I was stubborn this year on wanting Heaps to remain the starter but frankly, No one saw Riley's success this year since every report on practice was that no one was even close to as good as Heaps in practice. Having said that, I will finally admit that I have been right on nearly everything.

I gladly admitted I wrong about Nelson last week. Helped myself to a bowl of crow.

More than willing to admit the offense needs help. First and foremost at this point, staying aggressive in the 2nd half!

Man it's just too bad you weren't available when Kwhitt turned down the Y for the head coaching position. We'd have a couple NCs with you at the helm! ;)

I admit it- I thought he was so bad that he should just do crazy upperclassmen-loving Bronco a favor and quit the team. And maybe last year he was. 2012 is different so far.

What's that Garth Brooks says about unanswered prayers again?

I never got into it too much because I'm not smart enough. So I admit to being a fan of ignorance on talent evaluation and faith in Bronco to do what is best for the team. That said what I saw in RN was very pleasing to me. I think he can play. FINAL THOUGHT The way Riley runs, he's going to get injured. We're going to see Jake some more.

I will also admit to believing too much in the hype of this team and year and not just enjoying the games, well at least most of them....

While I never really chimed in on the Heaps/Nelson battle; I consistently stated that I don't believe in true freshmen playing big time college football.... ever. (please refer to my old tony temple story if you want to know why)

A redshirt year is extremely valuable and IF Riley manages to improve steadily and has a solid grasp on the job by season's end (big if), I wholeheartedly hope that Heaps and the coaching staff consider a redshirt on Jake.

Once Jake's redshirt was burned, I did argue that even if Riley could offer us an extra win or two, that it was incumbent on the staff to play Jake. Many on this board (one year ago exactly) did not believe that we would be going to a bowl game, let alone win one. Unfortunately while I was right about how weak our schedule was and how we'd get to that bowl game, I was wrong about how much that time would help Jake... to the point of being dumbfounded and almost catatonic since the 2nd half against Texas. (I want that 2nd half back with Riley as the QB)

On the other end of the spectrum, if Brandon Doman does not know how to maximize the talents of Jake and get the most out of a very high ceiling talent, then I put that on Doman as much if not more than I put it on Jake. Jake is broken right now and I'm not sure who is responsible.

I honestly think we've seen Riley's ceiling. It's not very high but it's doable when surrounded by guys that do their job. However Riley's 2nd half mistakes were verging on gross negligience against SJSU, a very mediocre opponent. He made 2 throws that could have cost us a game we had in hand. I was almost as disgusted at his decision making as I was in the fact that we were throwing when averaging 6 yards a carry.

This thread will get very very interesting if OSU goes poorly for Riley and this forum will be unbearable. Here's to hoping we win convincingly, though I'm not sure if this team knows how right now.

I backed Jake as the starter this year - after taking heat all last year for pointing out that he is a freshman and should be red-shirted and that he needed to prove things on the field before being annointed king. I supported him after Riley went down in 2010 because at that point, BYU hadn't gotten anyone else ready to go. But after he struggled, I called for a look see at Lark. Explained about rising tides, oats and boats when Jake finally got going. Having made that investment last year, I expected Jake to show great improvement this year due to that experience. About that I was wrong. Re Riley, I was not sure how good he would or could be - but wanted to get some glimpses. I called for Doman to Let The Cat Out of the Bag more often. But I admit - I under-estimated Riley even though I was calling for him to start the USU game. He exceeded my expectations so far. So Far.

BTW - OSU will be a close match. Think Ole Miss. Probably about the same level of opponent. Think of all the teams we beat. OSU is in the ball park - no better - no worse on average. They have a little momentum. They found a starting QB. They have James Rodgers back from injury. The guy rumored to be out with a concussion - was said not to have concussion symptoms Sunday. Might practice tomorrow. Who knows - maybe I am wrong about that. This will be the toughest game to predict so far for me.

BTW - Bronco essentially said that Alisa lifted a lot of boats Saturday. The OL blocked longer and harder. The other RBs started running harder. The D got fired up. No conspiracy - RM non RM or upper vs lower classmen. Just inspiring play lifting other boats.

COMPLETELY AGREE with this post. I think it is great that we can let what actually happens refine our perspectives on this team. I have underestimated Riley Nelson's ability, but I also feel like some of my concerns are still justified to this point. Let's continue to watch what happens and keep talking.

About the only thing I don't like on this board is the broad, sweeping, and borderline extremist views on some things...particularly on Heaps either being invincible or being somewhat akin to the scum between Ute fans toes. Furthermore, the premature and glowing assessment of Riley Nelson at times made it seem like fans think he is Jimmer Fredette.

I admitted my wrongness about Nelsons arm last year, after watching him in spring. He has a lot of zip on the ball on short mid throws, and I said as much last year. As you go out, the zip goes down to improve accuracy, but that's for a another thread.

I admit that I underestimated his ability to get the ball up and down the field. I think he would have a lot more challenge to do so against better teams, but maybe he wouldn't. i certainly hope he doesn't, as I want him to have the job for the rest of the year (that means no struggles, etc.) I would like to see Jake come in during scrub time, though. So I would like to actually get way ahead of these teams that we should be blowing out.

I admit that I bought into the offense is going to be beyond the stars hype before the season. They looked good in practices, and in games. There was a lot to show me that it was the truth, and I ate it up. I figured we would struggle a little with Doman being a first year coordinator. I admit that I, like the entire Cougar Nation, bought into that and got a second and third helping, and now we are all wondering why our collective belts don't buckle.

I admit (and have admitted) that Heaps isn't playing at a level I would like, but also as I have stated, that no one on the offense has been doing that against any one that doesn't have "state" in their name.

I think that we all need to be cordial to each other, and I feel like we can refrain from namecalling or belittling people WHO CHEER FOR THE SAME TEAM AS WE DO. I admit that I have done my fair share of both of those things, and while a have tried to be objective about things, that I have been known to lash out a little when pinned into a corner. I am sorry especially to Bib2, who has gotten a little of it (and who also egged it on sometimes, might I add ;) ) .

There are others, like Sno, SPiff, Hawk, Schmoe, frdbtr (in the past) that I have been on the opposite end of things with, and in some cases I have been less than civil. I apologize for my share of those arguments, lovers spats, or whatever you call them. I love BYU sports, and I am very passionate about them. But that is still no excuse to name call and belittle people.

I'll admit as I did in a different thread that Riley has improved since last year and it's hard to know if Jake has improved or digressed as he did very well at the end of the year vs bad defenses.
