BYU favored by 1 @Oregon State

No one is wowed by our offense this year, and the Beavers seemed to have pulled it together the last two games offensively. Will be a tough test for us now, and should not be.

The big if for me is whether we can get a better pass rush and defend the pass better. SJSU exploited us. I think we candefend the run...it is the pass D that will be crucial. I think we are good for 28 points next week--can we hold Oregon State to 24? I think so

I did not hear of any injuries Sat night. With Penny, Putnam back, and everyone healthy on D - maybe we hold them to field goals.



They will have a better pass defense than SJSU presented. I am going to have to try to find some detailed scouting on OSU strengths and weaknesses and especially trend to predict this one. OSU will be better than Ole Miss IMHO. They will be as good as or better than UCF, USU, SJSU. They will be better than 1st half Texas butnot as good as 2nd half Texas. Utah was a fluke. I refuse to b elieve otherwise, but Utah is 0-3 PAC and OSU is 1-2 PAC. OSU is as good as Utah is now butnot as good as Utah was with Wynn.



BYU 24 OSU 21 is my preliminary prediction. BYU 3 TDs and a field goal. OSU 7 field goals - a record probably. But Bronco says that is how he manages points. Let them rack up yards but force field goals.

OSU is awful. Their QB is the only true freshman QB starter of any of the AQ conferences and he sure looks like it. They had a decent running back who suffered a concussion in the Arizona game. They have one player of note on offense, a WR named Wheaton. He's a solid steady receiver. Rogers used to be a threat, but he has clearly lost a step since his ACL injury.



Their D is nothing special at all. They have a couple of serviceable LBs. No pass rush and their secondary isn't great either.



The only reason they beat Arizona is because Arizona is a flaming pile of poo right now (it pains me to say it). AZ's special teams gave up a fake punt, missed a fg, missed an xtra point, got a punt blocked for a TD, and fumbled a kickoff and Arizona still almost won the game in Corvallis.



I can't say any of our opponents are worse than Oregon State. They lost to Sacramento State for heaven's sakes!!! All of this means that your prediction is correct. BYU will win by 3 points.

If BYU plays like they did from midway through the 2nd quarter to the end of the game, they will lose next week. As bad as OSU is, they have better athletes than SJSU.

Maybe our numbers guys can pop some scouting info up here.



I read that OSU is not in the top 100 for passing defense rating. But they did cause some problems for Arizona's QB who racked up a ton of yards, but only 1 TD, and some turnovers. Maybe we can throw effectively against OSU.



I am not sure how good their rushing defense is.



They have just now locked into a new starting QB. He did well early but was rattled and turned it over a couple of times late.



Their young QB may give our DBs a bit of a test and OSU does have a couple of receivers that could give us problems. We will have to see about James Rogers who recently returned from injury.

Even if I wasn't a betting man, I would take BYU under 1.5 and Oregon State under 1.5: Hope for a 1-point game and win two bets! Someone wins by 2+ and you break even.



I don't actually bet, but that's how it would work, right?

Nope, unfortunately that's not how it works. You can either bet on OSU covering the 1.5 or OSU not covering the 1.5.

BYU started out favored by one and a half. But we can't know which way the line will move.

Though if you would have known how the spread would change, you would have been able to accomplish your break even thing. But if we're assuming you're clairvoyant, you'd be much better off picking the team you know will win...

Or, find two different bookies that are 3 points apart at the same time.

A little arbitrage and a little hedging... but in today's climate of "occupation," the prudent thing is to not admit any connection to Wall Street or finance or big business in general.



Today I watched an small handful of about 200 people parade through downtown Minneapolis shouting that they were the 99 percent. The economist in me couldn't help but smiling at their creative math.

It's much easier to sit around a street and watch your dreadlocks grow than to actually do real work to encourage change.
