Riley's second half due to half time adjustments by SJSU?

It has been suggested that Riley Nelson faded in the second half due to half time adjustments by SJSU. Well, I just watched the game again due to the BYUtv replay and IMO, it was completely BYU's offensive philosophy in the second half that caused BYU to only throw for a few yards in the second half. BYU ran the ball almost exclusively in the 3rd quarter and only threw the ball 4 times. Riley was 0-4 in that quarter but had a couple throws that could have been caught. In the 4th quarter the first drive, Riley came out and went 3-3 and then had a horrible throw as he was going down for a sack (baaaaaaad decision) but it did not get intercepted. the 3-3 was a bubble screen to apo (all YAC) and then a 16 yard down field throw to apo and then a 8 yard pass to apo. He then threw a really bad decision throw on a screen that should have been a pick 6 but was dropped. His last throw was a flat out drop by matthews that was 16 yards down field and could have scored. The last drive of the game was all about running out the clock to end the game. All offensive philosophy. I don't think that SJSU stopped the pass game at all. So all you that say that Riley was good until SJSU made its adjustments really have no actual data to support this argument other then pure vitriol.

How about Riley was outstanding, until the second half? And then he was poor. Because he was. Great first though. Wish Doman could get his O to play a full game. We lack killer instinct in play calling and execution.

I don't think he was poor either. I think that he was average and that the ball was taken out of his hands for the most part. BYU came out of the half in "protect the lead" mode. I completely disagree with that philosophy and hopefully Doman won't do it again. I think that Bronco and Doman decided at half time that SJSU didn't have the capability to come back from that lead and decided to just protect the ball and run the clock. I hope they don't do that too often or it is going to come back and bite them someday.

He was poor. A pick, a dropped pick, a horrible duck throw up prayer. He made some nice throws, had a drop. But ask Spiff what his second half PER was. It was poor.

His second half PER was 60.

I think it was due to the offense being called from the booth. If they had come out in the second half with the same attacking philosophy they had in the 1st half, his per would have been more of the same.

Wouldn't you start taking the ball out of Riley's hands after a fumble and 2 picks (that EASILY could have and should have been 4 picks) ?

Against one of the worst teams in college football? Who almost definitely won't go bowling, despite one of the easiest schedules in college football?

No, I would have called the game that got him a 200+ per in the 1st half.

Wow frdbtr. Some serious excuse making buddy. Did you consider that Doman probably about crapped his pants bc Riley was starting to throw the game up for grabs? I love what he did in the first half. But its delusional to think that he was even average the second half. Unless you want a different measuring stick than Heaps. IN fact Heaps had multiple halves better than Rileys 2nd half. NOt that I care where you hang your hopes for the season.

But in riley's defense, the whole Offense lost their edge in the second half, except for maybe Alisa.

Vitriol? PLease.

This is simple. Take away the turnovers and RIley would have had a PER well over 200 in the first half and a disappointing but not embarrassing PER in the 2nd half. Take away the drops - not the Oh he got a finger on it so he should catch it drops, but the wow how did he miss that drops, and RIley would have had a decent PEr in the 2nd half and averaged out higher than most Heisman candidates performed yesterday.

DOn't read too much into that comment. Obviously things like that happen to all QBs and affect their PER too.

But it is clear what BYU, Brandon Doman, and RIley Nelson need to work on in practice next week.

1. RIley - Ball Security when Nelson is running.

2. Riley - When to take risks and force a throw and when not to do so.

3. Brandon - when to risk calling a deep passing play and when to just keep pounding - especially until #2 gets improved.

4. Well that would pretty much be it. I found this game performance encouraging - but there is still much to prove before we make anybody King.

I still think Doman shares some blame, but Riley was bad second half. No other way to spin it. just glad we found and stuck with Alisa. He looked legit.

The entire offense went away from the pass game in the second half. 4 throws in the 3rd quarter and only 1 of them was the interception (one was a flat out drop by Apo). The dropped interception was actually a screen pass where Karyia fell down and Riley probably threw it before he realized his reciever was laying on the ground. The throw up for grabs was a stupid play but it was only 1 of the entire game. The interception in the 3rd quarter was not even a bad read, he just threw it to the outside of the field when he should have thrown it to the inside of the field. How can it be making excuses when I am stating what I am seeing. When they actually started running the offense again with an actual pass game, Riley went 3-3 with one throw being on a line 16 yards to Apo. SJSU had not game planned Riley out of the game, Doman had. It was crap, "playing not to lose", protect the lead football and if they keep doing it that way, it is going to come back to bite them. In fact, it already happened once this year at Texas.

So lets see. I think there is nothing quite like factual informaton to take the emotion out of baseless comments. SJSU is not a great team. They have a good offense. We lucked out - part of that good offense did not paly due ot injury. They do not have one of the easiest schedules in college football. Not one of the toughest either. There is a lot of space to work with between black and white.

2011 Schedule Buy San Jose State Tickets

Date Opponent Time/Result

Sep 3 @Stanford Lost 3-57

Sep 10 @UCLA Lost 17-27

Sep 17 Nevada Lost 14-17

Sep 24 New Mexico St. Won 34-24

Oct 1 @Colorado St. Won 38-31

Oct 8 @BYU Lost 16-29

Oct 14 Hawaii 9:00 pm

Oct 29 @Louisiana Tech 4:00 pm

Nov 5 Idaho 4:00 pm

Nov 12 @Utah St. 4:00 pm

Nov 19 Navy 5:00 pm

Nov 26 @Fresno St. 9:00 pm

NMSU - sure. Idaho sure. I would guess that if we played that schedule instead of the one we did, we would have stuck with Jake after getting killed by Stanford, losing a close road game to UCLA, maybe or maybe not beating Nevada, beating NMSU, maybe or maybe not beating CSU.

I doubt that these boys will go bowling. They have 2 wins. They should beat Idaho and might beat LA Tech. That is 4 wins. If Hawaii came in jet lagged and beaten down - maybe, but UH had a bye. So they will need to beat 2 of 3 vs USU, Navy, and Fresno State. It probably willnot hapen. But this is not last year's SJSU. They will win 4 or 5. If they had not scheduled two PAC rollovers on the road - this team would be going bowling.

Would you have pulled him or just done as Doman did and run more and throw less? I would agree with the latter. That is what ost coaches do.

RIght, so which came first? Riley's HUCKIN DUCKS or Doman's DUCKIN (the scheme) and runnin?

6 of BYU's 8 plays leading up to the 2nd INT were rushes, so I think Doman started killing the game then.

Riley had a poor passing 2nd half and his PER was reflective of that. Doman has yet to figure out how to call plays in the 2nd half and the offense has yet to figure out how to execute the plays that are called effectively.

To DM about Heaps having several halves better than Riley's 2nd half, that is true, but he has yet to have a half as good as Riley's in the 1st or Riley's in the 2nd last week. I'll try to post the QBs PERs by half later this evening or tomorrow.

But here's the bottom line: BYU had five scoring drives yesterday which included three touchdowns. Heaps never led BYU to three offensive touchdowns in a game, let alone a half, in 2011.

Heaps-ites just don't see this.

Yes, Riley had a bad 2nd half. Yesterday was his first complete football game in a long time.

So far in 5 quarters of play Riley has thrown 4 touchdowns. That's almost as many as Heaps in 5 games.

Actually, Riley has 5 TD passes this year, all of them in the last two games. Jake had 3 through four games.

Oh, even better than I thought.

But, throwing 5 touchdown passes is not what BYU football is all about, and certainly is indicative of Doman redesigning the offense to accomodate Riley's poor throwing abilities, wouldn't you say?

Clearly.
