Define Success - Poll

It seems that we are far enough away from "universal success" i.e. a performance level that would change the tone of the fan base from bickering about weak arms and lack of potential, and rocket launchers, and lack of touch, and poor coaching, and and and that the noise level is not yet likely to subside.

So for this year. Given our spotty start. Mainly the butt kicking at the hands of the U - the loss to Texas was bitter due to how it happened - but not many of you expected to be 6-0 right now. I think 5-1 with a narrow loss to Texas would have made most of us ecstatic even when we thought Jake would take off and improve greaty from where he left off at the end of 2010 and when we thought Juice would be dominant. And Drew Phillips, the guy who flunked out, would be an all-everything kick returner and slot back. And the OL would be super human. Oh and Apo and Hoffman would leap tall buildings in a single bound. Oh and Doman would be less predictable in play calling and Cahoon would ensure that we would see crisper routes than ever and that we had seen our last dropped pass. Oh and we had better DBs than normal and kiler front 7. Those were the core beliefs of most fans gonig in.

Ok - now reality has set in and we know that these beliefs were almost all - quite a stretch.

Now that we know more about this team - it would be nice to give them some goals - that if they fight and achieve or exceed - they and we would feel good about ourselves in this 2nd consecutive rebuilding season.

What will make you happy - and - positive - and shut up any whining from you and end your despair. Your answer should be based on Your MINIMALLY ACCEPTABLE Threshhold for success!

I am going to keep BIg 12 out of this - as that is not something the team can control.

I went with 10-3. I was always able to reconcile myself to a 10+ win season with 10 in an off year and 11 or more when things fall into place. Those 4 consecutive 10+ win seasons Bronco and Anae delivered are nothing to sneeze at - level of competition not withstanding. I will be ecstatic if we pull off 11-2.

But that ugly U game - I am glad I do not live in Utah this year. Luckily 0-3 PAC trend, if continued, should tone them down a bit.

I chuckle when I see Utes post that BYU has nothing to play for after losing a game due to Independence while the Utes could lose 1 and still contend for the Rose Bowl. I think the bloom has fallen off of the Rose for the Utes this year. We could very likely end up having a better overall season than U even after the embarrassing loss.

10-3. I refuse to lower my standards for BYU football. Sure we've already blown a national level of success, but to now go ahead and take care of business against the rest of the schedule would be quite an achievement for this team. I don't think they have any business beating OSU, TCU, or Hawaii but to do so would prove a lot to me and meet my measure of success. I make room for one more hiccup, which should be expected.

Double-digit wins, this means ten minimum, anything less would be uncivilized.

I said 9-3 to start the season; so I'll allow myself a 9-4 overall record. BYU should win the bowl game. Idaho, NMSU, and Idaho St. should be no problem. However, I think BYU wins only 1 game in the OSU, TCU, and Hawaii stretch.

I said 11-2 which seems unreasonable, but given the fact that we really haven't beaten anyone any good, I would need a good amount of wins to be excited about playing in the Armed Forces Bowl. All four teams we have beat are garbage. Even Utah is garbage. The remaining teams we play are pretty soft as well. The toughest remaining team we have is TCU and they're no good either.

Someone said we have no business beating Oregon St. Probably right, but they are 1-4 and lost to Sacramento St. Still after squeaking by Utah St and San Jose St, we should be worried.

I put 11. We haven't won any games yet against quality opponents. We've really only got 1 more shot at a quality opponent-TCU. 10 wins looks great, and in fact, it is probably what we will end up with, but I think a mediocre team could get ten wins against our schedule. 11 wins means we beat TCU. That is really the only game left on the schedule where the team can show significant improvement without just exploiting a weak team.

10 - 3. No reason we shouldn't win against everyone but TCU. I expect BYU to consistently roll out double-digit winning seasons and to keep the barn fully loaded of horses capable of producing such. I expect our coaches to perform at such a level. Anything less than 10 wins is a dissappointment.

We should be worried. They had a very inexperienced team this year. THey got James Rodgers back from injury after week 3. They discovered a starting QB - red-shirt freshman, yesterday. That lifted them as a team. You could argue that they beat a crappy Arizona team based on records. But ignoring Sac State, look at who Arizona and Oregon State have been losing to. You will find Wisconsin, Stanford, USC, etc. in the mix with UCLA being the easy game. I am not saying Arizona or Oregon State are a great team. They are both dangerous teams. Oregon State is probably as good as any team we have beaten.

If this team gets to 10 wins, I will be shocked. Since that is the measure of "success" this team will not be that. If they don't improve, they lose next week. I don't see any way they beat TCU in Dallas nor Hawaii in Hawaii.

Shocked - but will you be happy. It would seem unfair and pointless to tell a group of young men to get motivated to get er done and then give them a goal that you would be shocked if they achieved.

I guess if we just want to be angry with them for not being as good as we thought or hoped they would be - take it out on them all season, off-season and into next season.

I am just suggesting now that we know what we have got - what can we realistically, and with a bit of optimism, expect these young men to achieve.

I actually picked 10 as a target. But it is not clear that 10 is going to make you happy - maybe just shocked but still unhappy.

In retrospect, I realized that stopping at 11-2 as choices in this poll, since they have already lost 2, I should have added an option that says "I ain't gonna be Happy no matter what at this point.". I would try to change it, but in the past, that has resulted in all of the votes disappearing.

If we don't beat everyone with the exception of TCU this year we haven't reached our potential that Bronco keeps referring to. I am positive that we will. Didn't see the Alissa as primary RB threat coming at beginning of year nor did I see Riley becoming starter - remember they were going to have a few plays for him to keep the defense honest but never said he was starting material. I like the fact that they have now communicated to all that they expect tough minded play or you will be replaced. I expect to see the players putting out more effort because there is no free pass anymore. We cut down on turnovers and we will be difficult to stop - especially if our run game is as punishing as it appears - Alissa, Juice and Kariya with swing passes and short outs to JJ.

Still need to firm up pass defense in the middle with our LBs and our coverage by the safeties - I believe that Mees started and got significant reps in place of Sorenson although Daniel did get some reps.

I define a small level of success as being better than last year. Would I be happy with it? Slightly, I'd like to be at at least 10 wins, but improvement is success, even if only marginally.
