BYU Team Identity

The identity of the defense has long been - tough, you are not going to run on us, physical play. Hard nosed, smash mouth football. Physicality is respected and required.



Bronco made it even clearer today that this is also the identity he wants to establish for the offense. That is why you saw Michael Alissa as much as you did. Bronco felt an urgency to find a back who could run "over and through and slash" for extra yards. Alissa was showing that in practice.



Why did it take so long to come to that conclusion. IDK. But Alissa was on defense before his mission and may have taken a while to learn the offense.



Physicality is why you see Nelson starting and Alissa taking reps from JJ and others.



These are not going to be your grandfather's Cougars on offense.



Maybe a bigger emphasis on running the football and smash mouth football will help BYU recruit running backs who can actually deliver that.

The defenses "identity" seems to be:



If you run, we will stop you all day.



If you pass, well, we won't stop you there. But if you pass it near KVN, he might intercept you once a game, or so. So just pass it 20 yards out, near the sidelines. We will leave it open for you.



Just don't try to run. I'm warning you.

The offensive identity is:



We will play one good half of football. That is all we have figured out to do, so far.

RIley-ball will struggle mightily. They will spy Riley and make him hurt and his floaters will be like manna to hornfrogs. But its only one game. THen we will finish the season strong with questions vs hawaii and then be in a very similar place in the off season as last year. Going into our NC run with QB-[m].u.b.a.r.

I would have agreed with you, but then I saw the cougarstats tweet in the tweet scroll state that our pass D is better! odd.

If the best argument you guys have against Nelson is that TCU is going to crush him, you might as well take Heaps back to the corn crib and put him out of his misery as well. If the projected result against TCU is your litmus test, Heaps looks to be even more awful than Nelson.

yes, of course. NOt arguing against that at all.

Bronco said he saw a lot of things he liked about the offense in this game. He said we have made ourselves harder to defend. e basically said we just need to clean up the ball security issues.



Does that sound like he is ready to head back to finessse football on offense. I don't think so. And, it is a predictor of what players are going to need to do to earn PT.



As someone pointed out on another thread - JJ did not look happy on the sidelines. On one shot where Alissa had anice run and came out to the sidelines, JJ not only did not join in on the back patting, but actually moved a few feet away and did not look one bit happy. But later, when JJ got a few reps - I saw him running harder - or at least trying to be more physical at the point of contact.



The point of the OP wasn't that this identity is working great for four quarters at this point or even that it is the best identity - it is just becoming clear that this is going to be The Identity of this offense.

NOPE. Bronco is finally onto all the divisiveness and doesnt care anymore. he is playing the players who can produce. And not the Sr's just bc they are Sr''s. I heard from a HIghschool coach at the game who is close to some of the players and supported my contentions that there has been alot of conflict on this offense--led my the older players in reaction to the presumptiveness of the younger players that came in. Take it or leave it. I could care less. BUt some of you have been blind to these elements.

And yes, JJ has been right in the middle of it. Difference is Alisa is producing. Jake lost out. I get that. Alisa will gain the rest of the teams support. And JJ will be left to stew. Hes still valuable as an all-purpose guy. He is so very quick laterally and I believe always plays hard. I dont fault that at all. BUt finally this offense is hopefully finding its "sweet spot."

It is very interesting if not ironic that this Offens-ive Identity is starting to look alot like Doman's offense when he played. I gotta believe, notwithstanding his time as a pro, that Doman is most comfortable calling plays within this offense as opposed to the contrasting style that Jake was limited to. Im not a big X and O kind of guy, so I might be making a stretch. It will be interesting to watch over the next few games how Riley-ball continues to develop.

WOW! Remember when Doman pitched to Staley for that epic run down the sideline for a TD? That is one of a select few plays that is etched into my brain. Beck to Harline. Hall to George. 4th and 18 to collie. Well, i guess there are a bunch of others. Tonic for the ailments we've faced this season. Lets hope there are more.

It is much simpler than all of this.



Michael Alisa was not ready until recently. He was just moved from LB to RB when he got back from his mission and had some learning to do. BTW, inexperience leads to mistakes. So if MA makes one or two, let's not turn on him.



Bronco and Doman believed in Heaps because of what they saw in practice and got glimpses of in games. They probably considered LOC as contributing to his struggles - but losing to USU was the final straw and Jake ran out of excuses. I am surprised, a bit, that we did not see a change VS Utah in 2nd half - or even Texas - but the first half performances renewed hope in heaps hype. But USU - 2nd time in a row - straw - camel - back.



Bronco will make other changes if he has someone to play.
