Rise up, Cougar fans!

I don't know how everyone else feels, but I am a little tired of the people that are giving up on BYU sports just because of the Big 12 fiasco.



First, I am also a little disappointed that we haven't gotten an offer from the Big 12, but BYU is my team and they will always be my team whether they are independent, in the MWC, BIG XII, or even the Big Sky League. Let's show some commitment!



Second, when did independence become so bad? Last year, everyone was praising it and now everyone is complaining. I live in Illinois and I get to watch almost every BYU game this year. This is a huge upgrade from listening to every game on KSL.com. Gotta love Wrubell, but I prefer watching the Cougs on TV. Independence gives us all that opportunity where ever you live. (On a side note, can we get Wrubell to call the BYUtv games? He is awesome!)



Third, for all the dooms-dayers. We have an lengthy contract with ESPN, do you really think ESPN will allow one of their major investments to become irrelevant. ESPN is the ace up BYU's sleeve. If super conference were going to happen, you can bet your bottom dollar that ESPN will make sure we are in the mix. Their TV revenue dollars are on the line for 8 years here!



Let's rise up, move forward with our lives and support our team!

I agree - to me - the Big 12 wasn't a big deal. But - it does help with recruiting. I feel tht if we had beaten UofU, we would have gotten an invite. A 1 point loss to Texas, @ Texas was no biggie. The thrashing we got from the Yewts was a deal breaker.



But - all we can do is re-group & win. It does not matter if we are Independent, Big 12, MWC or "whatever" if we win. Winning gets it done. We win - the accolades, respect & Bowl games come.

BYU has received an offer from the Big 12, and they have been in negotiations for weeks.

Just went over to read what was happening at TBS. Astonished at the amount of big-time fans that have been die hards since I moved out here to Utah in 2001 that have partially thrown in the towel as the Cougar atmosphere seems to be the lowest it has been ever in my experience.



I personally don't know where I'm at. I'm going to the game, but that was because my daughter wanted to go. I was content to watch the game at home.



I notice more than anything the feeling that BYU has moved to a position of less relevancy and I don't believe that was their intention. Most people wanted to believe that BYU's move to independence was really a stepping stone to a better place. I can't feel that staying in the MWC would have made us feel any better and I think a lot of things have combined to put A LOT of Cougar fans into a semi-state of depression. Contributing to that for me has been 3 factors:



1. BYU suffering the most humiliating loss to Utah, which ranks as the worst defeat I've ever experienced as a fan. 7 turnovers in a home game against your rival on national TV.



2. Hearing that it might be a Fox network thing related to the Big 12 where they don't want to be shackled down with no option to have any Big 12 tournaments on Sundays.



3. Lack of communication from BYU admin taking the same stance as always that everything has to be a secret until the last minute and not understanding what is going on whatsoever. When Greg Wrubell opines earlier this week that he believes there is a chance for BYU to move to the Big 12 and then things seem to colapse afterwards meant that even the voice of the Cougars was not deemed worthy to even be aware at what is at issue. The Fox issue would be a deal breaker, but I can handle a lot of adversity if I just am informed more than I have been. Other high profile programs don't walk around so cloak and dagger. I just feel that it's been taken too far this time and I'm hearing a lot of people who are not going tonight to the game not because they don't have tickets, but that they can't at the moment get excited at where we are at. I don't know if they'll bounce back or not.



This is just different.

Oh, and I add an addendum and a #4.



Everyone realizes that Bronco is a great guy, but he really doesn't give off the vibe that he likes the fans by his behaviour and comments. Maybe if everyone in this sport was like Bronco and put football so far down on his list of priorities for his players, then he wouldn't seem so out of line. He's made me question myself whether football is a waste of time and if you really know me, such a comment would make your jaw drop. I'm seeing others out there that suddenly are expressing the same sentiments.

Wow - EM Puma. Sorry for those feelings. I don't feel that way @ all. BYU Football will be Ok - we just need to turn the corner & start winning. I' not sure where the problem lies - really. I do have faith in our coaching staff. This is not a blue goggle statement - but I have faith in not only Bronco - but Doman & all the others on Staff. It will improve. I really do believe they are a solid, professional bunch. All will be well. Persevere - we just push forward.

The last three weeks everybody's been divided into Team Big XII and Team Indy, Team Jake and Team Riley. Looks like we're now dividing into Team Optimism and Team Pessimism. Count me in the former, even if it's apparently the minority.



Programs eventually pick up. Ask WSU fans. Or Temple fans. Or SDSU fans. Or fans of any sports program in the state of Michigan, especially the Lions. We're in the even better position than most "building" programs where we know that, with the right players, the current coaching staff can win games.



Maybe my definition of "success" is too low, but I think the future still looks bright. Frankly, I don't even think this season is a lost cause yet.

If teaching these young and married men to be valiant on and off the field is a priority, then I think Bronco is doing a good job...firesides and whatever. But c'mon, his job title is a Div 1 Football Coach. Leave the spiritual teachings to the missionaries, parents of these kids/men, sunday school and religion class instructors. Coach football!!

I'll buy into this critique when I become convinced the two are somehow mutually exclusive. Have none of you had a teacher/professor who was effective as both an instructor and mentor?

You failed to mention something. I got it in there for you, but then, the rest of your argument suddenly isn't as persuasive.

Even in my melancholy state I went to the game and upon coming home I found out that it wasn't any allergies besetting me, but I've got a cold. Possibly leading to my BYU sports forlorness.



I will always believe in BYU and love the school for its uniqueness and the fact that it follows my religious convictions, which seems like a natural extension considering I work for the Missionary Department at CHQ.



It just seems like we were able to be relevant playing at the level of the WAC/MWC and we were on top of the pile. It appeared that our compadres in the MWC felt that they could live without us and gave us the old "don't let the door hit ya on your way out.." It's interesting why they all turned on us as they did. They apparently thought that BSU could step in and take our place and be less demanding. I don't know. BSU is a good FB replacement, but we were a whole program that BSU doesn't come close to reflecting. They'll never have our amount of following either. We are unique.



But as I said, we were at least relevant in those settings and we could boast with a win here and there over a good BCS team that we were worthy of so much more. I believe that BYU would have overall better success as a member of a BCS conference than Utah ever will. Utah will become just like AZ and AU, teams that every so often rise up with a good team and challenge, but will spend most of the time in the mid layers of the conference. They don't hold any uniqueness



Is BYU relevant as an independent? I guess that's the question. Can we actually mirror what Notre Dame does? That's really what we want. I think we could be happen being like them and when we stated that we were not interested in hooking up with a conference, like they have done; people are still in awe of them. I just don't think there can ever be another ND. If we had the power to get the schedule we needed for football, we would be fine, but I don't know if that will ever happen



I came away from the game okay last night. There was still quite a crowd that showed up, even that late at night and having to fight the loss of a lot of students who were attending a homecoming event. It was never thought at the time that the game would eventually be scheduled against that.



The crowd's enthusiasm has died down just a pitch, but is still vibrant. I think the beauty is that a lot of those fans, probably the majority never get into the detail of football like we on these sites do and therefore they are not carried on that roller coaster up and down like us. I don't know. I'm rambling and I'm going to stop.

Cheer up. Winning creates relevance. For BYU - just like everyone else - that comes down to scheduling. Yo need to schedule to win. BYU has lost sigt of that. BSU did not - but may be now. TCU lost sight of it lately. We are who we are. We will be very irrelevant in the Big 12 unless we dummy down the OOC scheduling to offset the upgrade in conference games. Even then - unless we break through the 100 year paradigm that results from our standards keeping certain types of players from being likely to come here and likely to stay when they do come - we will not compete well in a BCS conference. Sorry - but Utah does ot have that constraint and the PAC is usually an easier league than the Big 12.



The U can recruit players that might be just a little to gangsta for BYU. That is why they, like many schools, have 3 or 4 deep rbs where any of them seem to have the ability to take it to the house. We rarely have one of those. We do not have one of those now. They often end up at CB, WR, or safety and teams go three deep with speed and athleticism. We only get spurts of that talent.



So to go play Big 12 teams every week and then think we will pound ND, GT, U, etc. in th eoff-weeks: Very Naive. BYU has never had a team that could do that. Even 1984 and 1996 would have taken some lumps.



If we stay Independent - we just have to quit giving 2 for 1s or any other uneven field arrangements. And we should enjoy rather than complain about the cakes.



BYU has only gone undefeated once. Until we do that regularly - quit complaining about the cakes. The cakes are your friend and they have your back to protect you from temporary insanity.

Exactly. So does Utah have the opportunity to be more successful because more people would probably rather want to live in Salt Lake than Ames or Pullman? Maybe, but then that puts them in the same boat with ASU or Arizona, who likewise live in Phoenix and Tuscon, that are larger cities.



One of the issues that we are facing this year that we knew was coming was living a schedule that has no promise this season for many exciting games. If one of the games on our remaining home schedule becomes exciting, then we're doing something wrong. That's something that is challenging, and I hope we can really work out.

Both of whom I'm sure would have better recruiting and more money if they joined, say, the MWC. Wait, no.

Washington State has 2 BCS appearances to our none. And Iowa State has a shot at better bowl games than we do.
