Productivity of WR-TE

Interesting facts over last 3 games Cody Hoffman has 15 receptions, 230 yards and 1 TD; Marcus Mattews has 10 catches, 80 yards and 1 TD (last 2 games). Apo has somewhat faded in comparison - may be still feeling impact from concussion. Look for Riley to focus on these two productive guys vs SJSU.

I'm sure Riley will specifically ignore Apo and will throw every pass to Jacobsen and Hoffman. Apo is on Team Jacob so he is obviously not going to want to pass to him...

Nothing forges a team better than winning and winning with the knowledge you are hitting on all cylinders. Look for Riley to help the WR have some breakout games. As Rubell pointed out, we win 86% of our games when we pass for 300+ yards and run for +100 yards. I think that we can do this if Riley plays all 4 quarters like he did during the USU game.

I really don't see Riley passing for a full 300 yards, with a team having a week to gameplan for him. Even against one of the worst teams in college football.



I hope I'm wrong. I would like to see 500 yards and a record tying 7 TD's passing out of the kid, just really don't see it happening. He likes to run too much. And with how badly our Oline is playing, even SJSU might be getting pressure on us.

300 yards isn't necessary, in fact we only have one game with 300 yards passing this year. Though with a more effective offense I imagine we'll stay on the field longer and be able to rack up more yards.

In 1.5 quarters of play vs USU, Riley ran 11 times for 62 yards and completed 10-14 passes for 144 yards. For the game we had 200 yards rushing and 251 yards passing for a total of 451 yards. That is the most that we have had this year and shows some real balance.



Our 3-headed monster RBs combined for 32 rushes and 133 yards. With Riley also running, he bolsters the overall ground attack with his presence. Look for the Cougars to try and run the ball alot on Saturday with probably 35 to 45 attempts for the game while probably also passing for close to 200+ yards. My gut feeling is that most of the throws will be underneath passes and quick outs and slants going for short to intermediate yards but moving the chains consistently. I see the TEs being incorporated more heavily into the passing game - complemented with tosses to Falslev, Jacobsen and of course - Hoffman (his favorite target).

Riley would be a fool to ignore Apo. I hope those two become TD friends.

Agree wholeheartedly that both Apo and Hoffman should be utilized. I am bothered by the fact that these guys have often been used for just tossing the ball up for grabs in the endzone or along the sidelines. Both have shown the ability to be possession receivers on square outs and sideline routes. I hope that they are used in a variety of settings but that we don't try and force it into them if coverage is tight - not always a high percentage pass. Riley seemed to traps this convent and threw a variety of throws to Hoffman and Matthews - many times biding time to wait for separation between WR and DB. He is less prone to lock into th WRs at this point, so I see him taking whatever th defense will give him and sometimes jus having the big guys go up and get it if mismatches are present.

I think just about any team would win 86% of games where they throw for 300+ yards and run for 100+. That's some good yardage.

In the Bronco Mendenhall era BYU is 80% when throwing for 300+ and running for 100+. So it's a good number, but not as good an indicator of success as a PER of 136.

Riley's career PER - just while playing at BYU for 16 games is 134.26. His percent completion rate is 56.3, averages 5.0 yards/carry, 5.94 offensive yards/play, 6.85 yards/pass attempt, and 12.15 yards/pass completion.



If he achieves those numbers against SJSU, we will be another BYU first down machine, will dominate time of possession, and get at least 34-37 points. This will also keep our defense off the field, well rested, and allow them to put great pressure on the QB and RBs.
