3-2 a lot better than 1-4

Team's not a juggernaut, QB controversies, but we are 3-2. I realize our 3 wins (and one of the losses) have each been narrow, coulda-gone-the-other-way affairs, but I seem to also remember people here predicting BYU would be 1-4 at this point.



For those that did, are you disappointed? Any continuing reason to think the team will be worse than 9-3 or 8-4 by the end of the season?

Yeah, it's a funny thing. At the beginning of the year, I was hoping/expecting we'd go 3-1 at the beginning of the year. 2-2 isn't too far off, but I think it's a combination of the fact that we didn't play all that great, and that our two losses could have been wins. I know Utes (and most other objective observers 8) ) would laugh at the idea that the Utah game was winnable. But Texas playing 30 minutes with Gilbert as their QB was a winnable game.



Of the remaining schedule, only TCU, OSU and Hawaii scare me. TCU for obvious reasons. Hawaii because of the location, history and the fact that they seem pretty good this year. And OSU because, in spite of the fact that they could be the worst BCS-conference team this year, I'm afraid they'll have finally figured things out by the time we play them, and they're probably circling us as their best chance to win. I suspect we'll win at least one of the three, though.



So I'd be ecstatic with 10-2, I'd be happy with 9-3, I'd be disappointed but okay with 8-4. 7-5 and I'd feel pretty awful.

We will be at least 9-5 unless we go back to Jake Heaps imho. My predictions for BYU so far this season rank #1 in CC Predictions Contest. We could be as good as 10-3 or 11-2 with a Bowl win - if we do not.



Who other than a Ute Troll predicted before the season started that we would be 1-4. A rational person may have said we COULD BE 1-4 at this point due to difficulty of schedule - but did anyone other than a troll PREDICT that we WOULD BE 1-4. I didn't see any. So true confession time if anyone did - or you can fess up if you are just being a drama queen. After a 1-2 start and a blowout loss - then a few might have predicted (vs Worried About) 1-4. Lots of people worried about 1-4 by then.



As a self-professed realist, i.e. others on here feel I am a pessimist, before the season started, I would have predicted a very close win over Ole MIss, a somewhat close loss to Texas, but competitive, a win over the Utes in a close, hard-fought game, a narrow win over UCF, and a comfortable win over USU. So out of all of that, 4 of those, I would have predicted could go either way. So, 1-4 was a possibility - but certainly not my expectation. After being 1-2, I started to worry that it could go that bad and might go that bad unless a change was made at QB but still did not expect it to. Very nervous at this point.



As the season started and we found out more about ourselves and our opponents, it became easier to predict. My track record has been pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. Look atop the leader board on the CC predictions game - 1st place season to date.



So, I am disappointed. Not that I expected 5-0, a Heisman, or a NC - realist, remember - I got all blue goggled and predicted a 1 point win over Texas. it was in hand. We let it slip away. Frankly, I felt it was more likely that we lose than win, but was I really going to pick against BYU in the CC prediction game. But I am disappointed. We caught Texas in a moment of very temporary weakness and did not put them away in the first half. If they just got ahead and stayed ahead - a little disappointment. In the bag - choked - big disappointment.



Utah - my MBA Alma Mater - love the Utes. Love BYU more. Huge disappointment although I have never been a Wynn hater. He is feisty and good for a whimpy looking scrawny dude that is injury prone. Huge disappointment.



UCF - I was most worried about an upset here. Texas was not an upset. I expected to lose to Texas, but expected a win here yet feared an upset. Not disappointed at all.



USU - Well I was so disappointed by half-time and you may recall that I predicted that it was going to happen the way Jake was playing - I was callling for RIley to start back then or to come in before half time if things were rocky. Huge disappointment. We were staring the deminse of our football program for 5-10 years with 4 back-to-back losses to in-state rivals. Try recruiting against that. Of course losing to USU even wakes Bronco up. Huge disappointment replaced by exhilaration when Riley Nelson came in, lifted the program on his back - and saved it.



Summary

Ole Miss - happy

Texas - unhappy because we had them and gave it away

Utah - huge disappointment/ embarrasment on ESPN - and I don't hate Utes - my #2 team

UCF - happy

USU - huge disappointment until 6 minutes into the 3rd quarter - then happy



Overall - we should be 5-0 given how our opponents have struggled - Texas tried to gift wrap it but saved their bacon by doing what BYU should have, but failed to do - QB change - from POTENTIAL to PRODUCTIVE. 4-1 would make me happy enough. Had we not had Texas in the bag, 3-2 with narrow losses to Texas and either Ole MIss or UCF and I would only be a little bit unhappy. But 3-2 with a blowout loss to Utah and a choke Vs Texas, and nearly being 0-5 were it not for Kyle Van Noy saving the offense vs Ole MIss, Special Teams kick-off returned for TD saving the offense vs UCF, and RIley Nelson saving the offense vs USU - I am furious at the performance of Jake Heaps - whom I still hope will mature, toughen up, and be what he has shown the physical, but not mental, POTENTIAL to be. Acutally, I am furious with the coaches for not trying something different in Q4 Vs Texas. That's when the Offense really lost their fragile confidence.

PS - more improtantly 4-2 will be much better than 3-3. SJSU. Focus on them. Ensure a win.



5-2: Oregon State will be roughly like playiung Ole MIss at the time we played them. Defense had to save the offense. We will need to ensure a win.



?-? TCU will be a tough test given that someone was foolish to give them an (un)neutral field advantage. Wouldn't it be nice to get them in Provo in tis vulnerable year. Same thought I had about Utah - backfired. Why. QB issues. We have a shot to pull out a close win over a struggling TCU team. it would be an upset - ensure us our best chance. Heaps showed what he could do or not do last year. He seems even worse this year. Nelson - ask me again after I see SJSU and OSU.



Better take em one at a time.

With the remaining schedule, less than 9-3 would be more than dissapointing, other than TCU, you can NOT lose to anyone else. Having said that, the season is well on track, the losses weren't unexpected, just the way the Utah game went puts a real bitter aftertaste on this season so far.

C'mon, you've got to beat Hawaii, home or away, they are 3-2 with a kindergarten schedule so far (and rest of the year)

Maybe so, but better BYU teams have lost to worse Hawaii teams in Hawaii. It's a tough road trip.

So let me get this straight, Utah playing with a gimpy QB, patched up OL, inexperienced running backs, a new OC that most BYU fans think is all washed up, and new secondary - in PROVO - and you call it an expected loss? Did you also expect to get blown out by them?



BYU was favored every week but Texas by the odds-makers and therefore 4-1 was expected and the choke in the 2nd half at Texas puts salt in the wound.



BYU by all accounts should be 5-0 if we had average level BYU QB play. I am disappointed, because avg BYU QB play would likely take us the rest of the way. This could have been a BCS Bowl year with AVG QB play.

No way we go 9-5 unless we get 2 bowl games this year

My inside source says we'll be announced as a member of the Big XII for THIS season. Now all we have to do is make it to the championship game... ;)
