Awkward Heaps Interview

Here's a video clip of Heaps getting interviewed. He flounders a bit when asked if he's getting less reps and talking about what he needs to do to improve.

He really can't think of anything that he needs to improve? Yikey.... :bug:

I'm a Jake fan too....

I feel bad for the kid, I don't think he needs the media in his face this week. Give him a week or two off.

I agree, Hawk. Not what I would have done. He needs to focus on making throws not making interviews and he doesn't need a journalist sitting there asking him how he felt when he's busy trying to move past the incident.

I think it is all good. Part of dealing with tough things, and not being pampered. This will all make Jake tougher. Let him deal with it.



By the way, not sure I love how Riley is dealing with it. He comes off as very terse when asked about Jake with all the "NO Comments", while Jake compliments Riley in interviews. Riley needs to learn to be more congenial and gracious.

LOL. Jump on Nelson for his "no comment" re: Heaps, but we're willing to forget that when Heaps was "the guy" he answered questions about Nelson with the same "no comment." Let's at least be consistent in criticism.

Have to agree here. I didn't have a problem with Heap's "no comments" don't see any problem with Riley's. When you're asked to throw your teammate under the bus, sometimes its best to say nothing at all then something the media can twist into something it wasn't meant to be. Of course, fans can also turn nothing into something.

Not really that awkward, Just player talk for the most part and having somebody who is not really that great or mature to answer the questions correctly in the "player/media typical way". Some of you read too much into these things. It's obvious that he's a bit bothered that he got replaced but I bet he understands that there are things he needs to improve. Often if there's a lot of things on your mind it's hard to answer specific questions when you really don't know how to feel yet, especially this soon after.

It took him a while to spit it out, but he was on the right track - make the throws, reads, don't 2nd guess, don't look over shoulder, play football, have fun. I would just add toughen up and stand in there and take the hits necessary to get the timing on the throws.



But this has been a problem - it is really hard for Jake to acknowledge his poor performance as HIS.



Maturity will afford Jake opportunities to get better at this and to toughen up.

C'mon guys - Riley is trying to keep controversy out of the conversation by not comparing the style or leadership between the two QBs. He referred them to Bronco if he didn't say no comment to potential tabloid feature headlines. The players love Riley because of his positive attitude and not bagging on people. He showed it in the interview by not calling Heaps out. Fact - Riley has earned the players respect by his blue collar play and being one of the guys. Heaps still hasn't shown this type of connection but does say he feels loved and supported by the team during this situation. Bottom line is Riley bode his time on he sidelines and was willing to do whatever it took to help the team - gunner on punt coverage. Enough said. He took advantage of an opportunity that was given Jim and I don't see him relinquishing it when given the opportunity to prove. He has a very sure of himself attitude (even cocky) because he believes he can win in any situation. If you have played around these players, you don't see anything wrong with the statements - he is business and wants to focus on winning and not stirring up controversy.

Exactly. Riley was taking the high road. How easy would it be after the USU game or this week to let out some of the frustration I'm sure he's dealt with for the past year.



BYUcougar1, I'm always wondering who Jim is, gotta be the autotext feature on your phone trying to say him. Right? I keep thinking that you just don't know that Nelson's first name is Riley. lol.



I also wonder if the divide that we keep hearing about on the team concerning the QBs is much milder than the gaping grand canyon division between the fans. We've probably juxtaposed that sort of feeling onto the team when really the team division is probably pretty mild.

Without even watching the interview, I could've predicted who would've thought Riley was throwing Jake under a bus, who thought Jake showed a lack of humility, etc.



That's not a knock on anyone, I just think we're reaching the point where held opinion starts to shape observation.

Well, to be honest, I either did not (a) know, (b) remember, or (c) care that this happened earlier with Heaps. However, I would be surprised if these things are identical in terms of context.



Furthermore, I think my words came across stronger than intended...but nevertheless, not meaning to be critical, but more like a little suspicious.

That's because it's a lot easier to (A) know, (B) remember, or (C) care when you are trying to nit pick the guy saying it. ;)

It is an awkward time - interviews will be awkward. Reporters trying to stir the pot. The no comment responses clearly were directed as a message of I am not going to feed the beast. Jake and Riley handled things well enough. Jake should have spit his improvement answer out quicker, but the eventual response was fine.



A bunch of noise over nothing.

I guess I thought he would say that he needs to improve his mobility but I forget that he is a 20 year old kid being grilled by seasoned reporters. Can they refuse to be interviewed or I'd it mandatory???

They maybe should have put them both off limits - or the entire team - media is trying to get all of the players to say something news worthy.
