Get ready for all this crap to flow when Nelson plays well on Saturday and beyond, can't wait. :sulk:

I really don't care who plays, as long as they win games. Period. Who's style of play do I prefer? Depends. When Jake is on, I'd take him any day of the week. The passing game has always been more exciting to me than a run game and the Hoff and Ross are pretty dynamite when they can get balls to catch. However, when Jake is off, Riley is a good change of pace and can provide some excitement. But he doesn't have the skill set that Jake has and vice versa; Riley's game is completely different than Jake's. No one can argue that. That's not a knock on Riley. He's a stud and provided a spectacular result on Friday and no one can take that from him. I just hope the coaches make the right decision for this team and for it's progression. I don't know what that is and don't claim to know better than the coaches who are there everyday with the team do. Hopefully whatever they decide works out for this team.

Hopefully. Someone needs to step it up. But you have to admit that any qb should be able to do well going forward. tcu is not a world beater this year either. they are currently ranked behind smu.

i think anybody who does not think that the schedule just got significantly easier is not being honest with themselves. I think even Jake, who has been playing worse and worse each week, would end up playing better against teams like san jose state and idaho. in fact i am quite certain that manumaleuna could beat idaho as quarterback :)

That shouldn't take anything away from Nelson. he won the game last week for us which heaps could not do. he deserves to start. It is simply hard to read too much into beating teams like sjsu, idaho state, idaho, etc. tcu is good but how good, not like they were last year or in previous years. they are just a good team at this point, nothing more.

the best team we played was texas and we had that game. take away some ridiculously bad coaching and we win that game even with jake's lackluster second half.

i get tired of the nelson/heaps debate. just play whoever is going to help us win. right now that looks like riley. i wouldn't be disappointed to see heaps start again though. I also wouldn't be disappointed to see riley starting. i believe whoever starts of the two we win anyway.

being honest though, i don't think riley is better than heaps. he has his strengths, but I think they have always been pretty even.

I thought the schedule was supposed to have started to ease up last week?

I think this kind of statement is only relavent if we win close games against bad opponents. Last year everyone gained confidence in Heaps because he pummeled our bad opponents. I don't think anyone expected him to struggle to this level this year. That is why it is so obvious that his problem is confidence, because he has progressively gotten worse every game this year. His best game was against Texas which probably has the best defense we have seen this year.

I think playing in those difficult games really was bad for him. the texas game in particular. he had nobody open, his runningbacks could not do anything, and he was getting pressured on every play. It really limited what he could do and put a ton of pressure on him. given how bad our running game was though i thought he did pretty well. but there is no doubt that he is getting worse each game. he was pretty bad in the usu game.

and usu should be 4-0. i think they are a lot better than their record shows. they will compete for the wac title this year. riley coming in late was just what the team needed and usu was not prepared for it.

for those who think riley is better than heaps they might also be in for a surprise because i think they are pretty even. riley played bad in the utah game. he also made some horrible throws in the utah state game, but his running saved the day. what was nice to see was his ability to buy some time as well as an actual pump fake every now and then. I am not confident that we beat ole miss with riley or almost beat texas with him either. in fact i think we lose bigger to texas with him. I just think people are in heaps or riley camp and see what they want to see.

fact is they are both pretty even and always have been. neither has been able to really separate themselves.

he pummeled 2 teams and struggled against the rest of the bottom of the MWC, apparently people do not remember that part though. I did NOT buy the Heap hype before this year began. Especially when the offense struggled against the defense in fall camp like they did. Have to remember that Jake could have easily beaten Texas with all the opportunities they had but like every other game, the offense couldn't get in the endzone.

I will say, I was more impressed with Heaps performance against uofu than any other game in 2010. He was solid and looked like he was getting it together. But we haven't see that kind of play again out of him unfortunately which sort-of confirms my belief that utah just stunk last year.

Edit part 2: frdbtr, I swear I wrote that part about Heaps vs utah before I saw your post. I must have been writing it as you wrote your post. Good point, but I still think that BYU should have beaten uofu, they just weren't good and had lost how many in a row?

He also had a higher PER then Max Hall did in his best game against utah.

Heaps was a different QB last year when he was playing with confidence then he looks right now. I remeber him looking down field, stepping up in the pocket and delivering good throws to his recievers. This year, he looks tentative, afraid. Not sure when he completely lost his confidence but he looks worse every game.

Heaps was a different quarterback at the end of last year. He was borderline great. Yes, it was against the weakest competition in all of college football, but there is no denying how great he looked against CSU and the bowl game. Thats why I was so excited to see what a Heaps year could look like with a full off season of starters snaps. Unfortunately it hasn't worked out so we need to do whatever we can to get him to a place where he can become the QB we saw glimpses of last year, and hope he can become.

See my edit above. I wrote basically the same thing as you about utah. He was good that day, even better in my my mind than the CSU or UTEP game.

See, you've already made up your mind regardless of what happens on the field. You're not even willing to give the kid a chance even though it's the first time you've ever seen him play healthy. I didn't come into this season, or even last season, rooting for one QB beyond the hope that one would play well. We have one now who is, and one who isn't and hasn't for the entire season thus far. Let's give this one a chance first.

I agree with this. Heaps has what it takes but something is seriously wrong. the coaches need to help him get to the bottom of it. he is clearly regressing and struggling with something.

Watching him against Utah last year and making it through the qb drama alive made me think that he mentally had what it takes but watching him struggle this year and get worse and worse is baffling. His play clearly gets worse each game.

Great post. Agree 100%. BYU needs Heaps to perform well and utilize his remarkable talents. Anyone who would question this kids talent is obviously determined to be angry about his poor performance.

We are going places if Heaps puts it together.

Basically, the whole discussion is getting a bit threadbare. Those who have reservations about Nelson are justified. Those who want to see someone other than Heaps start are justified.

Some of us are committed to Heaps because of what we see COULD come to fruition...and that is sensible. However, we have real life to deal with while we wait for Heaps to come around (if he ever does).

So for now, Riley has earned increased opportunity and Heaps is still the one with the talent that is capable of taking us to higher places. As best as I can determine, that is where we are.
