Heaps Reps Reduced

No one admits to it (although Drew tweeted yesterday that based on reps splits in practice, Nelson is starting against SJSU), but Heaps' response to questions about reps indicate to me that he is no longer getting starter's reps. Otherwise, you don't answer the question "Have your reps been reduced?" with something akin to 'I don't keep track of that. I'm just trying to make every rep count and take it rep by rep,' or "I have to take advantage of the reps I have at practice, and learn as much as I can from the situation."

Bronco made comments about changing reps Monday am in his conference, so this was expected.

But isn't less is more?

Reports are that is was 90% Jake 10% Riley for game prep previously. Reports are now that is is basically 50/50 split. Riley earned the extra reps, and earned he right to play more. Both are gonna play. You don;t split reps if you are going with 1 guy.

I'd rather go back to 90/10 Heaps than revisit 2QB again. If we go back to that, I might move out of the Bronco camp and into the neutral zone on coaching support.

It should be obvious by now that QB2 was not the problem per se. The problem was Heaps was nowhere near ready to play and Riley was injured and only slightly more ready ready to play at best.



Level of competition would have killed either of them if we had gone QB 1 and Nelson going down would still have resulted in an overwhelmed Heaps taking over until weaker opponents and a defensive turnaound arrived.



Don't take me wrong. I don't want to look at QB2 unless it becomes necessary to win games. QB1 Nelson for me - unles he proves incapable of geting the job done. Lark for mop-up becasue we ned to develop him and Jake does not need more reps. He needs time to reflect. Reps have not been helping Jake - maybe hurting him.

Doman has indicates that he doesn't see any reason not to continue with Nelson, and has recommended the change to Bronco. While he doesn't have the final say, he recommended that Riley play and start against SJSU.



Could be related to the fact that he had 4 red zone appearances in the final 20 minutes and came away with 2 TDs. Could have had more if not for JJ's fumble and botched FG attempt.



Riley's teammates have also stated in words that speak volumes. WR Jacobson noted hat the team played with more heart, put things together, made drives..."all of them were playing with a little bit more heart out there."



IMO both will play but Riley will get a chance to show whether the USU game is something the team can build upon with him at the helm. BTW it will be the same offense that Jake was running but with Riley having more running options at his disposal should he decide to tuck and run with tight coverage or scamper around until a receiver pops open. Bronco admitted that Riley has speed, quickness, and mental toughness - which is why he was voted by special teams captains to play the role of a gunner. Clearly this shows his athletic ability and hat he will not shy away from contact.

Snoscythe, there's hope. Bronco said in his interview rather than attempt to have essentially two different offenses each catered to the QB like they attempted last season, they've learned their lesson and are sticking with one offense. Now, that doesn't mean specific play calls won't change depending on the QB, just means it's one play book.

If Nelson isn't getting 90% of the snaps in practice it's a real shame and will only limit our offense on game day. When are we going to see what Nelson can do with an actual starters week of practice?

And what if Nelson stinks it up in the first quarter, no offense, poor passing, interceptions, etc? Then Heaps has a chance to win the position back again. I don't think we're going to see a repeat of last year, but we will see both QBs playing, and considering Heaps has not exactly set the world on fire, and neither has Nelson--except for 1.5 quarters last week; we're going to see both of them...we might even see Lark.

Then Riley gets a chance to work through his struggles. If Jake can get 4 1/2 games, I think it's only fair he get a fair shake. And to me that'd be a couple, three games where he's the starter. Where he's the one the game plan revolves around. Where he's the one getting the majority of reps in practice.



If after two or three games, he's nowhere near the 136 PER standard, then it's time to start looking for other options.

Riley has not had a chance to prove himself. When he was brought on, it was obvious he was in there for a run draw or QB run - trying to make yards when the opposition knew what was up. Despite this he still managed positive yards, and didn't look too bad against the Yewts when the team was dispirited and beat down. What I saw then was someone who was gritty and determined and even made an attempt to tackle the LB after a blind side hit. I knew then he was of a different mind set than Heaps and stated then that he should play more. Give Riley a chance - h is a different player than last year and deserves as much a shot as the golden boy - with whom we exercised extreme patience.

Agreed

Going back to the 2qb option would be absolutely idiotic, as would be Bronco's idea of seeing how one pans out and then potentially bring in the other. It's a message of little trust and puts unneccessary pressure on both.
