A Few Brief Thoughts

I apologize for flooding the CougarCorner.com timeline this morning. Let me try to synthesize my thoughts.



There are 105 guys on the team. Lots of personalities. Lots of Type A personalities. These are guys who have always been the best at everything they do. They come to BYU to play, not to ride the pine. Most will make every effort to fight their way onto the field.



That can sometimes cause a problem, especially at positions expected to be the source of leadership. Bear in mind that you have a Nelson who has to fight for everything he has; lots of guys appreciate that. Then you have Heaps, who many feel was essentially promised the throne without having to earn it. That divide is easy to capitalize on.

Like I mentioned in a tweet, I do not think it's a matter of players refusing to play for Heaps. Rather, Nelson came in and provided an energy that we were not seeing. That gets players excited, especially since it opens the possibility of winning. That extra excitement creates "luck."

I think BYU should go with the hot hand. It's good for BYU, and it's good for Heaps.



If BYU goes right back to Heaps, there's a chance the team will emotionally revolt. But if they go with Nelson, there's a better chance that his effectiveness will wane (I'm not a Riley hater, and if he can win out, good on him and good for all of us). In the intervening time Heaps will have the chance to watch what it is that makes Nelson good: he FIGHTS.

Heaps has all the tools. He does not have time to implement his tools because he is afraid to get hit. He has been raised in an environment where physical pressure was not present. 7x7 camps. Passing camps. The green jersey. A high school team significantly better than its competition. All these have combined to help Heaps develop technically, but not intestinally (I made that word up just now).



Hopefully watching Nelson run the offense will give Heaps a chance to watch what a tough QB looks like. He will learn how to keep plays alive. How to squeeze a full second out of the pocket by standing tall. How much easier it is to lead a team when they know you're willing to put your body on the line.



I support BYU, no matter who the QB is.

No worries about filling up our timeline here, mcgregor. If we didn't want your thoughts and opinions you wouldn't be on the list! I think they are a great insight and a well thought out series of comments and thoughts.

Let me also add that with 105 players, there are 105 different interpretations of what's going on in the locker room. What someone says about this subject isn't necessarily right or wrong, without being right or wrong . . . if that makes any sense.

What you are saying is that BYU needs to take the green jersey off of Jake in some reps and go live, and let him prove it to his teammates is practice. When he does, the respect comes, the trust comes, and all else. Obviously, there are risks with this approach. But the upside might outweigh risks for a short period of time.

Can you imagine if Jake Heaps had Max Hall's Moxy? Or if Max Had Had Jakes Arm strength?

Great point. Jake needs to be removed. he was given more than enough time to figure it out. he didn't, let him watch for a while and see if he can learn something from riley. riley deserves it.
