Late 3rd, Early 4th Defensive Woes

We seem to have a major problem tackling in the late third and early 4th quarters. It takes two or the three big plays by the opposition before Bronco subs in the fresh backups.



Anyone have an idea why Bronco is putting the backups in sooner and more often?



We have enough capable backups at LB, DL and CB. We have heard good things about Hague at Safety. Sorenson and Uale haven't been so good that they have to be on the field. IMO we need to sub our starters more often so they will be fresh for the stretch run at the end of the game.

Part of the defensive struggles of the 3rd and 4th quarters has been an offense that has gone 3 and out repeatedly in the second half. Heaps was 1-5 to start the second half and had one first down (thanks to two runs) against Utah State - this led to his benching.



Heaps started 3-9 in the second half against UCF, but did lead a TD drive on his second drive (two pass completions and several runs by JJ) thanks to a 38 yard field after a great Stephenson punt, defensive stand and good punt return.



Heaps started 1-6 in the second half against Utah in his first three drives that included a fumble recovered by Utah at the 6.

With a qb who can play with heart, inspire the offense, move the ball, and put it in the endzone (fingers crossed), our O will sustain drives, be on the field longer, give the defense a reason to play late, and give the defense a rest.

I agree with Spiff and Schmoe here. Are biggest problems on defense in the 2nd half have been caused by the inability of the offense to hold onto the ball for more than 3 plays. It is incredibly disheartening to come out playing from behind and then have 3 and outs on offense.
