Burden of proof

I have had confidence in Heaps from the beginning, saying he's the guy and will grow into a great QB.



He still may eventually be great. But in my estimation he is just a bad college QB until he proves otherwise. I hope he proves me wrong.



And I understand he was upset that he got benched, but he could barely pretend he was happy that Riley was leading a comeback. It's like the game is about Jake, not about the team.

He just simply is playing bad football. I'm not happy about that. I so want him to do well. Admitting that my hopes in our young phenom star QB were misplaced is hard to do. But he has done nothing this year to make me think he is any good or even has potential. He just simply looks bad.

Yup. BYUrocks has some personal investment in Heaps.



I really wish Heaps would play as well in college as he did in High School. We all want BYU to be a great team. I'm not pleased that Heaps is having a horrible year. But I also don't think the blame can be shifted to the other players. BYUrocks wants to blame 2 dropped passes for Heaps looking bad tonight. If every other play was good, or even mediocre, I'd agree with him. But the fact is Heaps is just an inaccurate and indecisive QB this year. Almost every QB in the country is playing better than he is. And nobody, especially Doman, seems to know what the problem is.



For the record I don't think Riley is all that great, but he sure looked a lot better than Heaps tonight. THAT is sad.

Agreed. If a WR touches the ball he should catch it. Its his job.



Its the QB's job to get the ball to the WRs and not to the DBs. You can't possibly tell me you think Heaps is accurate this year. Sure there have been a few drops this year but way way way more incompletions are due to errant throws than drops.



I know it upsets you that people aren't happy with how Heaps is playing. If it makes you feel any better I would LOVE to see him tear it up each and every game. I just am less and less confident every game that he is going to be a consistently good QB.

Heaps might very well be to the NCAA as Ryan Leaf was to the NFL. Supposedly had all the skills, but didn't have his head right for the game.

Heaps came closer to throwing a pick than he did to throwing two TD passes. Heaps would not have gotten the QB Sneak TD he got had Riley Nelson not taken right down the 2 foot mark. He hit the USU DB right in the hands.



BYU just needs to decide if it wants to ask ESPN to keep showing Jake Heaps potential or Riley Nelson making plays. Jake will get another shot - maybe sooner than he has earned. Riley has earned the starters spot at least until he let's a team get ahead of the Cougs by his bad play. Give Jake heaps time to get hungry enough to think about making plays instead of avoiding hits.



Jake Heaps nearly killed the program. Imagine BYU trying to hold onto recruits looking at two more years of losing to Utah and Utah State. We were on the cusp if 0-4 when Doman called Bronco and asked for permission to make the change. Perhaps Doman is learning from experience - go up in the box - see what is working and not working - make adjustments and tough calls.



The last coordinators that lost to USU on the road got run out of Provo. Doman making the change, Nelson making the plays, and Bronco letting Doman make the call rallied the offense, breathed life into a. Defense that was on it's heels, and avoided Armageddon in BYUdom.

PS - a defensive player came up to Bronco when the ball was on the 4 yard line and said, "Remember the Spring Game, I have faith in Riley Nelson - just watch.". That is how the team feels about Riley Nelson. Leadership.

My observations of tonight



Heaps watches one receiver until he throws to him.

Nelson checks through the progression.



Heaps rifles almost every pass, at any distance.

Nelson throws a more touch pass.



Heaps is very inaccurate this year.

Nelson isn't as wild.



Heaps is a star.

Nelson is a competitor.



If Heaps gets to the blue zone, they might possibly get a field goal.

If Nelson gets to the blue zone, they are likely to get a touchdown.



I really believe that Heaps is a better player than he has shown this season, but leaving him in isn't bringing it out.

Nelson has a lot in common with Doman, who also wasn't a great passer, but was a real competitor, which made him good enough to make an NFL roster for multiple years, and he was not cut, he left to coach at BYU.



It won't be as easy for Nelson when teams have a chance to game plan for him, but we haven't had a chance to see how far his competitive edge will take him, and some clipboard time might do wonders for Jake.

What if the ball is thrown so high or so far out in front of you that all you can do is get your fingers on ball as you stretch out? Sorry byurocks, the mantra of if-it-touches-the-hand-its-the-WR's-fault doesn't hold water.
