Question for defense experts

What was going on with those plays where SDSU got off big passing plays to a receiver covered only by a Safety (I think all three were Andrew Rich). Was it something different every time, or SDSU taking advantage of a weakness in our defensive scheme?

I'm not a defense expert by any means, but what I saw on SDSU's big plays down the field was this: they has max-protect on the quarterback with 7 blockers for the QB and they just let their receivers run downfield and use their size/speed. Nothing terribly fancy that I saw, they just put in a package that gave their players that extra bit of time to let their speed make a difference.

Quote from Bronco: "At the end, when they had to move the ball quickly, we knew they weren't going to use as much max-protection and we were successful at making some plays as a result"

From Drew's blog:

Question: What was your defensive game plan?

Mendenhall: “The defensive game plan coming in was to make sure they couldn’t run the football. We didn’t think San Diego State’s quarterback, with normal protection, would be able to win the game for them. They did a very nice job of using max protection and running through our zones, basically, holding on to it long enough and basically outrun us.

“At halftime, we made a few adjustments there. I think they were successful. I was impressed with the wide receivers of San Diego State, and their quarterback, with extra protection. So we modified a little bit at halftime, and I think that helped us out.”

It really was a game of two halves in regards to defending the long ball. I'll have to watch the game again to be sure, but were there any long balls after the half? When did the 3rd and forever touchdown occur? I think it was in the second half, but now I can't remember.

Great info and answer, thanks Snoscythe. I'm still concerned about our defensive speed and the fact that we had such a hard time adjusting to their gameplan, but it does help to know they were pulling crazy stunts to get their yards.

SDSU scored 14 points in the 1st half.

SDSU scored 14 points in the 2nd half.

BYU did not give up the long ball in the second half, and without the failed 4th and 1 from BYU's own 40, SDSU only puts up 7 in the second half.

Yeah, I wasn't to crazy about that--not that Bronco went for it--though we really didn't need to, but the play that was called. I never understand when you have a half yard to go why you hand it off in the back field. The oline has to push forward a half stinking yard. Our oline has to outweigh them. Hall couldn't just QB sneak it a half a yard? Other than that, BYU had an excellent offensive game.

Oh, and the fake spike-- that was wreckless, crazy, gutsy, and I loved every minute of it.
