BYU WR Kody Epps Enters Transfer Portal

BYU WR Kody Epps Enters Transfer Portal

This one hurts. He was our best returning offensive player. I guess being a starter in the Big 12 just isn't enough. Probably getting more NIL money elsewhere. That's gotta be our next step as an athletics program if we're going to be competitive. I hate that college sports has become about money, but just simply existing in a P5 conference isn't going to cut it...

I guess we'll see if such a move works out for him. There were lots of names I heard while following the NFL draft later rounds where people had tons of money thrown their way for their last year and then had a subpar season and slipped way down in the draft standings. He might find himself fighting for playing time that he would have had here.

BYU is going to have a hard time finding a replacement for those 460 receiving yards and 18 rushing yards. Time to circle the wagons!

Per twitter, Epps reportedly already has offers from Auburn, Colorado, Miami and Ole Miss since hitting the transfer portal.
He has also received interest from Alabama, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah and Virginia Tech.

Not sure what to make of your comment. He was injured for what, 5 games? And he was going to be THE man this season so it was more about what he was GOING to do this season. He had the potential for 1,000+ yards and 12+ TDs. Tell, pray me, who on the current roster is going to step up and do that? Anybody that actually watched him play knew he was good, but he was playing behind some really good talent. The offers that he's getting tells how good he is and will be missed.

His numbers last year put him in the same category as Brayden Cosper and Chase Roberts (and behind Keanu Hill) all of whom return. I suspect that both Cosper and Roberts will have the same impact that Epps would have had had he stayed. With all of the injuries that happened while Epps was here, he had plenty of opportunities to step up, and yet he didn't. He himself was injured. I guess it is possible for Epps to stop getting injured, or to drastically improve in his playmaking output - but I've watched enough football to know that potential and actual results are frequently very far apart. I suspect that he realized that he would be behind other receivers, and decided that his best fit was elsewhere. I don't believe that this loss is anywhere near as significant as the media is making it out to be.

Epps played in 6 games as a true freshman in the Covid year making 5 catches for a total of 47 yards.
Epps missed all of 2021 due to injury (medical redshirt).
Last year Epps (Redshirt/covid freshman year) played in 8 games and started 4. He put up numbers placing him only behind Puka and Keanu Hill statistically.
The expectation/hope was that he would fill a starting role in the coming season and finally have a healthy year. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen--but he certainly has that potential. Is he going to be able to walk into an Auburn or Colorado and be slotted in as a starter to be relied upon this year? I'm not sure. He will be on a quick study for their playbook and competing with the athletes there for playing time. Time will tell if this move is a net positive for him. It does set back the BYU WR room since they had been using the spring reps to position things for fall.
In any case, Epps will move out of the things I'm emotionally invested in--which I'm sure isn't anything he is worried about.

This whole Epps saga makes absolutely no sense to me. Now that he confirmed he is back, I can't help but just think what was that all about. I just can't wait to get on to the fall season and see who will emerge and contribute.

Kody Epps Withdraws From Transfer Portal, Returning To BYU

Well, he's back! That was quite the fun turn of events. Was this some 4D chess to get him some more NIL $ locally and to bring in another WR (Lassiter)? I, for one, am excited to have him back. He supposedly had a great spring camp and had formed a great connection with Slovis.

Edit: Fido beat me by mere seconds to posting this news! 8)

I am so glad he is back and then we added Lassiter. Epps would had been a huge loss.
