Rumorboard link reports Kilane Sitake is being interviewed

Post by Cougarfan87 »

Of course, that doesn't mean he will ultimately get the hire...or that the rumor is even true. In fact, I'm not even sure why I posted this.

Bill Riley tweeted he heard from someone close to the process that the top 2 candidates are Robert Anae and Kalani Sitake.

Bronco also discussed his assistant coaches in this morning's press event with Virginia:

The University of Virginia introduced Bronco Mendenhall as the new head coach of the Cavaliers Monday morning and Mendenhall was asked about where he was at in assembling his new staff.

"It's currently a work in progress," Mendenhall said. "There have been some members who have been added to my staff. Interestingly enough, I don't think this is going to be a long process. When you are very clear about what your goals, priorities and standards are, some are attracted to those and some aren't."

Some of the guys who know best what Mendenhall expects as a coach are the ones he's worked with in Provo, which is why he's looking at bringing assistants with him from BYU.

"I have a very select group, many of which are with me now," Mendenhall said. "There could be a large number of coaches that come with me from BYU. That doesn't mean that is exclusively where they will come from."

He added that he wasn't sure at this point when or how he would announce the names.

From Jay Drew today:

Mendenhall acknowledged that a "large number" of his assistant coaches at BYU will likely accompany him to Virginia. At a minimum, defensive coordinator Nick Howell and outside linebackers coach Kelly Poppinga are expected to follow Mendenhall.

...

Offensive coordinator Robert Anae is a strong possibility to make the cross-country trek to Charlottesville if he does not become Mendenhall's successor at BYU. The Salt Lake Tribune learned on Monday that Anae is definitely a candidate, as is Oregon State defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake, a former Cougar fullback.

...

Another BYU job candidate whose name was mentioned Friday when Mendenhall announced his resignation, Stanford defensive coordinator Lance Anderson, told friends on Sunday he had yet to be contacted about the opening.

That's what I figured too. If Anae doesn't get the job, he will got with Bronco. He already left BYU once to go to AZ, so I don't think he is going to stay forever if he isn't the head man.

Now I just saw the tweet that Holmoe has reached out to Bevell about the BYU job. It sounds like Holmoe is doing his due diligence and interviewing the best candidates. I wouldn't be surprised if he held out an announcment until after the Army/Navy game to interview Ken N. as well. That doesn't mean he will hire him, but its not like there are a bunch of head coaching jobs still available that are clamoring for the BYU guys.

In other words, BYU is interviewing obvious candidates for an open position...

No real news that BYU is contacting Bevell or interviewing Sitake. Both fall under the umbrella of due diligence.

Agree. At least we don't have to speculate that Holmoe is not doing due diligence. There will be time later to second guess his ultimate pick. :D

I expect the first four phone calls Holmoe made are to:
- Andy Reid, Kansas City Chiefs HC
- Darrell Bevell, Seattle Seahawks OC
- Ken Niumatalolo, Navy HC
- Kyle Whittingham, Utah HC

Others who will for sure be given at least an interview (or asked to interview):
- Robert Anae, BYU OC
- Lance Anderson, Stanford DC
- Kalani Sitake, Oregon St DC

BYU PER W/L Since 1972: 432-76 (.850)
(8.4x
YDS)+(330xTD)+(100xCOM)-(200xINT)

I think Mike Leach and Charlie Stubbes get phone calls before Kyle Whittingham...and Mike Leach and Charlie Stubbs aint getting phone calls. The Whittingham family said goodbye to BYU long before Crowton left town, and Holmoe knows it.
