Who is the new coach?

Post by snoscythe »

Names being bandied about:

- Mark Pope (currently at UVU, some reporting BYU has already made an offer)
- Quincey Lewis (current interim Head Coach)
- Terry Nashif
- Mark Madsen
- Barrett Peary
- Alex Jensen
- Kevin Young
- Austin Ainge
- Norm Parrish
- Paul Peterson

Anyone else?

I personally don't like the Pope hire too much. I won't gripe about it if it happens, but it's the safe hire, and the safe hire almost always isn't the best hire.

Well, this is disappointing, but I get it.

I think of the names being bandied about, anyone but Pope is a clear step down, and I'm not sure that even he can fit the shoes, (I was a fan while he was here and he did some good things at UVU).

Good luck, to whoever it is. If you don't hit 20 wins, your "fanbase" will eat you.

I'm not sure that I get Quincy Lewis. I haven't noticed any sort of improvement in the program with him onboard.

I remember the day that Bronco announced he was leaving and at first I was excited at the prospect of someone coming in that could be better than him--at least personality wise; and could take us back to the glory days of BYU. That was my expectation.

The reality has not been the same. I like KS, but honestly I find it hard to say that he's been more successful than BM. Our schedule has been tougher in the KS era than BM and way more difficult than anything LE ever had. I think that has affected the outcome.

So, I have a lot more trepidation with replacing DR. I believe he was a really good recruiter despite how difficult it has been to recruit at BYU, but there we several times when you just didn't understand how we didn't get any farther down the line. This last loss by BYU to SD, a team we swept in the season, by 23 points was just so far out there that it just left the average fan with so many questions.

Tom Holmoe is only 2 1/2 years younger than Dave Rose, so it's not like he's going to be around here for ever either.

I really hope that it's Pope or Madsen. Is Jeff Judkins name out there? I'd say he's the safe bet, but the one I really don't want (great season though!).

Or you know, you don't make the NCAA tournament FOUR years in a row and don't even make the NIT. We can schedule for an easy empty 20 wins if that's what makes some fans happy...

The twitter favorites in order (and as Coach Rose alluded to, each would have a better resume when first hired than any BYU head basketball coach other than Ladell Anderson):

Pope
Madsen
Peery (my personal favorite)
Jensen (maybe the biggest fan favorite but probably the one least interested in BYU)

I'm surprised Norm Parrish isn't getting mention. He's a definite long shot but deserves a mention.

I would be okay with Pope or Madeson.

Please no Lewis or Nashif or Ainge. I will have a hard time being a fan if they are hired.

Jeff was quoted in an article the other week that he wouldn't want the job if offered. Maybe if he was younger.
