Great Taysom article; enlightening BYU offense quote

Post by Jarhead »

Taysom Hill reflects on his first year in the NFL: https://www.deseretnews.com/article/865 ... uture.html

It seems like Taysom is doing all the right things to have a successful career.

In regards to BYU’s previous offensive coaching staff, I thought the following quote speaks volumes and matches well with the performance we saw the last two years:

DN: What are your thoughts about Ty Detmer and the year you spent with him as BYU’s offensive coordinator?

Hill: My first year there, it was getting a new offense installed. I think the new staff there was trying to come together, figure out a new group of players, how they were going to best put together an offense suited for these players. The season was kind of a whirlwind because it happened quickly. As far as Ty goes, I had a positive experience with Ty. I really liked him as a person I think he’s a really good guy.

That's about the same sentiment Tanner Mangum gave.

Ty is a great guy. But it appears that he struggled to communicate with his QBs to get them to see the field they way he sees it. They didn't read defenses well. They didn't see the open guys.

It's like the Critchlow comment before his first start. Ty will call a play on the headset and then those on the headset would hear Ty say which guy would be open. Then that guy would be open, but the QB would throw to another guy. Ty didn't know how to communicate that to his QBs, so they never began finding that open receiver.

Isn't that a classic issue in sports? Those who see the field/court/ice ball differently from everyone else often have a hard time instilling that skill in others? Few highly successful athletes become highly successful coaches.

How do you explain to someone how to do something that you don't even know how you do it, it just comes naturally.

As an operational psychologist helping special operators in law enforcement get and keep a tactical mindset, it is considered professionally unethical to ask those special few who have the 'gift' to cognitively break-down what comes naturally; it actually slows them down and puts them at risk. So they intuitively have a very small circle of confidants.

Its amazing watching a group of those with that gift communicate with each other. Probably a lot like listening to Ty and Brett Favre talk back in the day.
