First off, congratulations to Donavon Mitchell for starting strong and keeping it going to win the 2018 slam dunk competition.

With that in mind it seemed more players were trying to duplicate famous dunks from the past. That was mildly entertaining and for sure an improvement over the past handful of years where it became more about the props and less about the dunks.

Here is my suggestion: Why not have a "H.O.R.S.E." style dunk competition?

1. Have the players randomly ordered just like we all did as kids playing in a multi-player horse game.
2. As long as four players (or more if the NBA wanted--but not more than 6 or 8 in my opinion) then any dunk that is duplicated successfully by each of the other participants give the original dunker a letter for doing something so easy/lame that the others did it with ease.
3. Judges could still be used to add style points that could be used as "donkey shots" some other token of do-over or letter immunity if a player performed another player's dunk in a more impressive way.

Doing this would add intrigue as well as actually see who is the better dunker on a given dunk as they would be compared to each other straight up.

I haven't watched it in years. What could possibly be better than that!?
