Roster 2020-2021

Post by byufan4ever »

Thanks Fido for the list that you made in another thread. Here is how I see the line-up. Stats are for the most recent significant season that player had.

Summary

While I am excited for this team and Pope is an amazing coach I am still worried but hopeful. We have great depth and potential, but not many of our guys are proven starters. Averette and Barcello are really the only ones that started all of their games last season. Someone is going to have to step up. While we don't have to have a player that averages 20+ points someone is going to have to step up (I know I just said that). I believe that person can be Connor Harding, but he needs to take a big leap. On the plus side we do have lots of upper classmen. On the downside I wonder if having too many transfers and the lack of team chemistry will hurt us. We also don't look like a very good rebounding team.

More in depth Review

Averette - We desperately needed a true PG with ball handling skills and he has that. If he can improve his 3PT % the same way Barcello did that will be a great benefit. I imagine that his assists will go up, but I am also worried about his TOs.

Barcello - I think we know what he is now and so does the opposition. He can't go left. He is a decent ball handler but not a true PG. Thrives on open shots and finishing at the rim.

Harding - Was a very efficient player off the bench on a deep team. Also a good defender. Now he needs to step up to be THE guy. He's a 4 star recruit. He's been on the team the longest along with Lee. Ideally I'd like to see him as a SG and get some match-ups against smaller guards and maybe he will from time to time but I think with this roster SF has to be his main position.

Baxter - He progressed so much at the end of his Fr season and then rushed back from injury last season to look completely lost and lose a year for just a few played games. If we see the continuation of who he was at the end of his Fr season then look out. I think he has legit 4 start potential but is still a ways off from reaching that.

Haarms - A prized transfer recruit that we would not have gotten in years past. BUT, I still think that he is just a role player. Don't expect Childs or Mika out of him. He will be a very solid defender and if he can be a good passer then that will benefit the team. I know he didn't start all of his games last season but his lack of rebounds for his height worries me.

Wade - A fun side note - my son is friends with one of his cousins (it's a very big family and he doesn't hardly know him at all). He is a very big question mark. How healthy is he? His Gonzaga stats don't do him justice, but at this point we just have no idea what we are going to get out of him. If he can't play who the heck is the backup PG? If he can get some valuable minutes this season then he could be our starting PG next season. But no way I see him starting this season.

Knell - I know that he can shoot the 3, but his number didn't really show it and he really didn't get a lot of minutes especially late in the season. My perception was that he was a 3 point specialist and he's going to really need to up the other parts of his game to get significant minutes.

George - Very raw and honestly those are pedestrian stats coming from a JC. I think he'll be a good defender with the potential to be an elite defender but I really don't expect much from him offensively, ever. Caleb Lohner may push for some backup SF minutes as well although he is also very raw.

Lee - Played great at times last season especially early on with Childs out. I expect solid minutes out of him but I kind of think he's reached his cealing.

Harward - I hear great things about him, but I just don't see it in the stats...yet. He would have to start over Baxter or Haarms and I just don't see that happening this season unless Baxter doesn't progress.

Lowell - I like him and he seems talented, but where does he fit in? I know he's 6-10, but he has a decent 3 point shot so maybe he could even push for backup SF? He will probably deserve minutes, but at the expense of whom?

Agree. Great post - although I'm not sure that I follow you on Lee hitting his ceiling. He played much much better last year than the year before, and I don't know why that shouldn't continue again.

Some players just peak early or hit a plateau. I'm not a professional scout, but personally I think he's playing close to his full potential. I would love to be proven wrong.
