Re: Yoeli Childs - Is he going?
If you're staying you don't have to worry about taking away from Rose's retirement.
He's gone.
Because if you're staying it's not really a story.

I wouldn't blame him really. He gauged interest last year, had a good year this year. I actually hope guys can make the pros by coming through BYU even if it means we miss their senior year from time to time.

Yoeli: Best BYU player never to play in an NCAA game.
Am I wrong? Who are some others in the last 40 years? Justin Weidaur...but his career wasn't nearly so good as Yoeli's.

Re: Yoeli Childs - Is he going?
From what I've heard, the Yoeli decision was made during the process of Rose being convinced to retire, but Yoeli was asked to hold off to give Rose the best possible send-off and avoid the appearance that Yoeli's choice influenced the Rose retirement.
Yoeli leaving is actually a blessing in diguise for a new coach who can focus on building what he wants to build instead of immediately feeling pressure to build around a *star* player in year one. No Yoeli means the slate is pretty dang clean as far as expectations in year one.

Re: Yoeli Childs - Is he going?
Which is another way of saying the cupboard is pretty dang bare.
With the stratospheric expectations of the fanbase, an incoming coach has to know that there's pressure to produce immediately. Without the tools to do that, this is a FAR less appealing opportunity for any good prospective coach.

Re: Yoeli Childs - Is he going?
I believe that if BYU hires Mark Pope hire then Yoli may be influenced to stay. Pope's track record with big men could persuade Childs - if he realizes that staying at BYU would give him the best development he could get for the next season. But hiring a coach just for the prospect of keeping a single player is really putting the cart before the horse

Re: Yoeli Childs - Is he going?
Good point.
Wasn't Pope on staff early in Child's career/recruiting? So it probably depends on how that relationship went. And on how much the HC would actually coach position groups.
