Good points Gunk. JT unfortunately does suffer from playing alongside some very effective players.

Last year, his PAP (points available percentage) was .438 and his true shooting percentage (which weighs free throws, field goals and three pointers - kind of like slugging percentage in baseball) was .544. Both are decent percentages. Unfortunately, he played with Jimmer whose numbers were .516 and .605 respectively and Lee who was .554 and .622. Jackson was also pretty good at .491 and .627. So JT's numbers look worse because of how much better some of his teammates were.

This year it's the same problem. While Tavernari's PAP is a lowly .389 and TS is .475 they are made to look even worse because Jimmer is at .571 and .663, Jackson at .562 and .746. Haws, the true freshman, is .574 and .653 and the guy who took JT's starting job is at .656 and .668.

But JT is still finding ways to contribute. He is second in rebounds, fourth in assists, and third in steals and fourth in scoring.

BYU PER W/L Since 1972: 432-76 (.850)

Haws, Hartsock, and Emery have all played much better this year than expected. It's been fun to watch. Abouo hasn't panned out like hyped yet though. Davies isn't starting, but has shown more bad than good. Miles is the invisible man. And we all knew Fredette was Superman before this season started.

Also, those who say that the team is better this year than last may very well be right. Those who say that the team is better BECAUSE Cummard graduated, not IN SPITE OF it, are idiots.
Let's be very clear;
Hartsock is D1 material and not garbage
Abouo is D1 material (he was also not a hyped recruit coming out of high school) and would be starting if Tyler Haws weren't so damn good so early; in fact he did start early in the season... he's not garbage (his stats per minutes played are very good - but Tyler Haws IS that good... worthy of the McDonalds AA game that he wasn't invited to)
JT is not close to being the best player on this team
Why is everyone so shocked that Hartsock is a playing well this year? Those who thought that he wasn't D1 material last year were fools. He barely got off his mission in time to start school last fall, and was forced to step in when he should have been redshirting. The anomally last year was that Emery played so well, which brings me to another point: Why so surprised at Emery's increased production this year?

Both Hartsock and Emery were dominant , high scoring players in HS. Emery was very good as a freshman, and Hartsock was a beast in Bartlesville. Both played on missionary legs last year, so they were far from their potential, and Hartsock was injured to boot. I have been waiting with excitement sinse last year to see what these two players would do this year, and they haven't dissappointed, but certainly haven't surprised me. I predicted last year that this would be what they would bring this year, and I'll go on record now that they will continue to improve.

We have a lot to look forward to with this team, and I have faith that this is the year that they get over the mental block at the first round of the big dance.

Remember, this is while playing diminished minutes.
