BYU scoring mark might need asterisk

This is a dumb article and I'll tell you why: Harmon asserts that because there was no shot clock or 3-point line when the old record was set, that the new record means less. Why? Because that would mean that a team or player couldn't score as many points, right? Wrong, he also tells us how the team would regularly score 90 points a game, which is pretty on-par with what the team scores now.

Harmon used to be the authority on BYU sports, but he has slipped significantly in the last few years. One thing that I usually like about him is that he shows that he is actually a fan.

I don't mind Harmon at all, I think he just needed a filler article for a lull in BYU sports now that football's over and this is the best he could come up with. We've all turned in a last minute, uninspired paper at least once in school.

I don't like the idea of an asterisk, but I would be open to separate record books: pre- and post-three-point lines. The game is very different than it was 30, 40, or 50 years ago. I would be okay with record book distinguishing between the two eras.

The players are all much better now, and the competition is much more tough, so and advantages we have in 3 point lines and shot clocks are countered by better competition and such. The record was broken, and will be broken again. No asterisks .....

Never been a fan of Dick... going back to my days as a sportswriter for an off-campus student publication when I was at the Y. He often mooched off of other people's work in the press conferences.

I have no problem with splitting the record books in two. How many times do we hear NBA commentators mention a record "in the shot clock era." It does nothing to diminish what Jimmer did last week.

I wouldn't take anything away from Skousen's record. I agree that players are bigger and faster now but 47 points is incredible in any era. Both Freddette and Skousen had incredible games. One doesn't take from the other. I wonder if Skousen had sons and did they play anywhere.
