BYU 2020 is the best passing team to start a BYU season.
I went back and looked at the last 45 seasons' first 6 games. I looked at Passing Yards, TDs, INTs, Completion Percentage, PER, and Wins. I then ranked the seasons in each category from best to worst and assigned points for each ranking (1 point for first, 2 points for second, etc.). The season with the lowest number of points would be the best. Here's the top ten passing seasons first six games in the last 45 seasons and the bottom 5:
1st: 2020 - 22 points (8th in Passing Yards, 1st in PER, 9th in TDs, 2nd in INTs, 1st in Wins, 1st in Completion Percentage).
2nd: 1983 - 26 points (3, 2, 3, 10, 6, 2)
3rd: 2008 - 34 points (14, 6, 4, 5, 1, 4)
4th: 1984 - 44 points (2, 14, 6, 7, 1, 14)
5th: 1996 - 46 points (10, 3, 11, 11, 6, 5)
6th: 2001 - 53 points (26, 8, 7, 1, 1, 10)
7th: 1980 - 71 points (5, 4, 2, 32, 6, 22)
8th: 2006 - 72 points (20, 7, 17, 3, 18, 7)
9th: 1999 - 75 points (11, 13, 8, 24, 6, 13)
10th: 1989 - 75 points (4, 10, 12, 16, 6, 27)
41st: 2000 - 216 points (31, 39, 37, 31, 41, 37)
42nd: 2004 - 223 points (28, 40, 41, 37, 41, 36)
43rd: 2010 - 223 points (44, 43, 45, 9, 41, 41)
44th: 1978 - 232 points (38, 44, 43, 45, 18, 44)
45th: 2017 - 262 points (45, 45, 44, 41, 45, 42)
Some observations:
- 2020 is the only season in the Top 10 in each category in the last 45 years.
- Kalani's first two seasons (led by Detmer), the passing game ranked 37th and 45th.

Wow, 2017 was a truly miserable year, as we all knew when it was happening, but man, it was awful.
