We have been a Nielsen family in the past, and we were invited to do so again starting last month, but declined. Nielsen ratings are just a survey of a certain sample size of households, and then they project those views across the population.

They have devices for cable and satellite services, and plug-ins for browsers. Some providers (Netflix, YouTube.tv, Hulu, etc.) insert tags into their code that send data directly to Nielsen when programs are streamed. They also ask that you keep a viewing journal -- what you watch, when, for how long, on what service, live or recorded etc. The paper journal is a pain, which is why we said no this time around.

My family did the Nielsen thing 3 or 4 years ago. There was nothing attached to any devices. We had a paper viewing log for each of our TVs where you write down what you watched for the entire week, and whether it was live or on DVR. They paid us like $7 in cash.

In watching the game I noticed Navy's #5 coming from the opposite side catching our guys. Thankfully he was a little late each time. At least Navy had one bright spot.
