Re: Who would you root for?
Every college I see, I watch it cheering either for BYU directly or for whatever will help BYU's prospects. Even NFL games are only interesting for me if they feature former BYU players who, if they have good games, can help recruiting efforts since blue-chip high school players frequently choose a school as a stepping stone to "the league"
If BYU football no longer existed I'd probably watch a lot more soccer. I don't think I could switch allegiances, though I was impressed with the "class" of most of the OU fans earlier this year, still I don't think I could cheer for a school I hadn't attended.

Re: Who would you root for?
IF BYU were to lose their program, which of course they wont, I guarantee UVU would have a football program pretty soon. I bet a lot of the big donors would transfer their loyalty there too, to build up a team that would crush the

I was thinking about that today myself.hawkwing wrote:So you've probably read the rumor-mongering thread by now, and I think we can all agree that it probably wont happen (the elimination of all BYU athletics), but I was just thinking, who would I become a fan of, if it did happen.
So, vote for who you would cheer for, and why.
The conclusion that I came to is that it would suck, and I would never be able to root for a team with the passion I do BYU.
So, I'd probably just watch sports and enjoy watching them... don't think I could have a "favorite" team. I'd just root for the underdogs.

Football: Wazzu of course even though they suck right now
Basketball: UNLV... I graduated H.S. in LV and attended UNLV for 2 years, during the Tark/Final 4 era. Which is an interesting parallel to this question for me. I was a pretty "invested" runnin' rebel for about 5-6 years. When they drove Tark our of town and crushed that program I pretty much lost all interest in college basketball except March Madness. So I could almost see the same thing happening if BYU football ceased to exist.

Penn St. would be an easy transition: same mascot, same colors. Always liked the Longhorns as well, though I can't explain why...

I don't mind, I read till I reach my destination,
sometimes a newspaper, sometimes a book,

Voted for Air Force, because they are a classy bunch over at the Springs. Definitely my favorite place to see an away game, so far.
Also picked "other." Since I would never again have to face the conundrum of rooting for the Utes because their victory would help BYU, I would adopt Utah fan logic and root for whoever was playing the U.

Re: Who would you root for?
If BYU were to drop football, college football would become much like hockey or the NBA to me. A passing interest with no real team I root for. I'll watch an NBA or NHL game if the matchup intrigues me. But there are no games I absolutely MUST watch or try to attend. I could never bring myself to root for the Utes or any other MWC school. More than likely I'd spend more time with Real Salt Lake and the Utah Jazz.
