Hard pass on Niumatalolo.
Why? The triple option?
Yes, absolutely YES! What drew me BYU is the pass happy offense of the early 90's with Ty Detmer. I have ZERO interest in a triple option offense. There is no guarantee BYU wins with that type of offense and how long will it take to get those types of player to run that offense in the program.

What about Anea? Look what he's helped accomplish at Virgina. It doesn't matter if he's an A hole with the administration and the media. All that matters is he runs an offense that is a proven winner.
I was in favor with Anae as the HC at BYU before they even hired Sitake (over Sitake that is). Sitake was a huge mistake. Everyone thought he would come in here and get BYU to Utah's level because he was a Whittingham protégé, well that isn't the case. The guy was not a successful coordinator (away from Kyle) and he has been a failure as a HC. I wanted Ken N before Sitake, I wanted Lance Anderson, Bevell, or basicly anyone besides sitake. The best scenario was to appreciate what we had so he didn't feel the need to leave but that (as everyone likes to point out to me), is in the past. Oh well, I guess we can continue to watch Virginia's rise and BYU's fall. Too bad I'm not a Virginia fan.
You and I are on the complete opposite side of the spectrum. I remember seeing KS when he was at Utah and he had a hard nose look and feel to him. I remember thinking that's the kind of attitude and fire I would want to see as a head coach. Instead he comes to BYU and now he looks and acts like a soft spoken mild mannered seminary teacher. Bronco did the same thing. Remember when he first got hired and went on about all the religious babble and references. Yes they work for a religious institution but come freaking on its football not Sunday school.

You are right KS struggled at Oregon State. Not a fair place to judge a coach and his abilities. Oregon State has no business being in a P5 conference and I'm not sure there is a coach in the world who could have made that defense any good that year. You can only do so much with the talent that is available.

KS needs to realize the same thing Bronco did. BYU is good at getting D linemen and linebackers, defensive backs are a struggle. That's why BM went from the 3-3-5 to the 3-4. Kalani needs to go away from the 4-3 and go to the 3-4 because he doesn't have the DB's who are athletic enough.
I've paid attention to the utes for a while, living in Utah. KS' defense at Utah was Kyle's defense. It struggled every year initially with KS and then you would read stories in the media on how Kyle concentrated on the defense in practice "that week" and then magically the defense would start playing well again. KS has never been a good coach, not at Utah, not at OSU, and not at BYU.

How did "we'll play anyone, anywhere, anytime" work out for Fresno State?

It's not sustainable without top-tier depth.
Yup. Even Boise State, which is a much better run program, doesn't try that.

I'd vote, but I don't think it's as easy as choosing one or the other.
I think Boise State’s scheduling only works if you join a G5 conference.

To me the question is simply “stay independent or join a G5 conference.”

Boise States schedule as an independent makes you completely irrelevant.
