BYU @ Pacific

BYU getting worked. Shots not falling.

Seems the chemistry is off a bit. Guys looking really disappointed with turnovers, bad passes, less jovial than it was before SMC. Something is off. Childs and Haws didnt' look happy with each other during the USF game. I don't know. Just an observation that might be nothing.

I thought this team was different. I was wrong. Time after time, we let them drive to the middle of the floor and give up shots in the paint. TJ Haws is a liability on the floor. He is bad on defense and isn't hitting his shots. Good teams don't lose to 6-10 teams on the road or at home. So disappointing.

Pacific's expected RPI was #220. This loss sucks the fun out of a decent season.

This year's team has the worst 2-pt FG defense of the Dave Rose era.

I took two of my boys (7 & 6 yo) and my father-in-law to this game. We had fun, but I wish we saw a W. It was such a frustrating thing to watch BYU play below expectations and ability. No mojo on offense. And Pacific’s O had free reign to shoot mid to short range shots nearly the whole game. Some of it was garbage slop that found its way in to the hoop, but still... Bryant looked good on offense, but no one else really stepped up as a scoring threat. Haws looks clearly afraid to shoot sometimes. Pacific shut down quite a bit of our offensive interior game, particularly as far as Childs is concerned. He didn’t have his best game today—except he was hitting his 3s!

Also, it looked like Child’s was limping to the lockers at halftime. Is he fully healthy?

Anyway, we almost pulled off a win at the buzzer. Wish we had. I hope BYU dominates when Pacific travels to Provo and that we don’t drop any other losses this season to the so-called “teams to which we should never lose.”

BYU will never win the WCC. Not at least until they stop losing to WCC teams not named Gonzaga and St. Mary's.

The Zags and Gaels don't lose to the bottom feeders of the league. If you think of Gonzaga, St. Mary's and BYU as the top 3 teams in the league (which they are) here are the number of losses to teams outside the top 3:

2017-18: Gonzaga 0 // St. Mary's 0 // BYU 1
2016-17: Gonzaga 0 // St. Mary's 0 // BYU 3
2015-16: Gonzaga 0 // St. Mary's 2 // BYU 3
2014-15: Gonzaga 0 // St. Mary's 2 // BYU 3
2013-14: Gonzaga 2 // St. Mary's 2 // BYU 4
2012-13: Gonzaga 0 // St. Mary's 0 // BYU 2
2011-12: Gonzaga 1 // St. Mary's 1 // BYU 1
Total: Gonzaga 3 // St. Mary's 7 // BYU 17

Ugh...we should never lose to teams like Pacific. We fell right into their pace of the game.

Going to have to win the WCC tournament to go dancing.

We were a bubble team prior to the start of the WCC games, then it appears like the NIT may be the best case scenario now...

Pacific seemed to play faster and quicker than us. Our D did not produce too many stops. What has happened to TJ? He seems to be regressing--he misses open threes and his defense seems to be to swipe at the ball. And Seljas? He can shoot most of the time but his D seems to be to pick up two quick fouls and sit....Bench play was quite disappointing.

This year's team is better than last year's iteration.

However, better than last year's team doesn't mean we are an NCAA tourney team. We might just be a win or two in the NIT better than last season.
