There was plenty of evidence to can Ty Detmer. But anyone who thinks that getting a new OC is going to solve BYus problems are kidding themselves.

... and what about field goals made longer than 35 yards? Seems like that part of the kicking game had to be the worst in the NCAA. Our opponents were attempting and making 50 yard field goals and we couldn't make a 30 yard chip shot.

Meanwhile, the kid who tried out for BYU this spring and was told that BYU just didn't have space for a kicker of his abilities went to Utah and is one of the top kickers in America. Yes Matt Gay.

I watched him try out ... he was incredible. He WANTED to come to BYU, preferred BYU to UTAH ... but our kicker cupboard was full

(My question is: is that one on Kalani or Ed Lamb?)

Whelp, Matt Gay was just named the 1st team All-American kicker, so he is not one of the top kickers in America any more. He is the best kicker in America.

While it burns me that BYU passed on this kid, I don't think he would have been an All-American at BYU. Utah has a good tradition of turning out excellent kickers, which reflects well on its coaches. Not a lot reflects well on BYU kicking coaches.

I saw a tweet that said the issue with Gay may have been academic. Can’t verify it though.

All I know for sure is that my friend, who used to be a kicking coach at a local high school, is the one who brought him to the Spring walk-on try-outs, and after the try-outs he was pretty a) unimpressed with the lack of interest BYU showed, and b) was unhappy with the brush-off Matt was given ... that BYU had their kickers all lined out for the season and they didn't need another one, so good luck at Utah (OK, maybe they didn't say that last part ...)

If this is the way it played out, and with how BYU football went this year.... I'm honestly happy that Gay kicked the utes to victory. What a garbage fire BYU football is right now.

The academics seemed to be a late suggestion to try to explain away the early disinterest.
