The latter option being the best for the future of BYU sports.

Re: What do you think the fan reaction would be?
I am uncomfortable with the phrases, "card carrying member" and "stupid tradition that a BYU head coach has to have a temple recommend". I don't mean to argue about this but this university is run by the LDS church and the Board of Trustees and they have the final say. Having said that, I understand Fred Davis was not a Latter Day Saint, so until the board reveals otherwise I assume it is a possibility. If, However, someone like Urban Meyer is hired to bring more wins then it might be just as well to become a bigger fan of Utah State, UVU, or some other school. (I would not, however, become a fan of U of U.) Until all this gets settled, I remain a BYU first fan.

Is there really a hard and fast rule? Or are they more concerned about finding someone who shares the vision of the university and the honor code?

To the board, I imagine football is little more than a missionary tool. So, yes, I imagine it matters to them that the head coach represent the church and their priorities.
I know people that have applied and are professors at BYU. The interview process is more intense than what they put missionaries through. I have heard accounts of BYU delving into why candidates only have 1 or 2 children, the rationale being that professors are supposed to be model examples of what an LDS family look like.
I know of candidates and institute teachers, being told that unless they get married within a certain time they would not be considered or if they had a job they would be fired.
A friend of mine applied to BYU. BYU wanted to speak to his bishop. When he asked the bishop what was discussed the bishop said he was not at liberty to say that he (the bishop) was sworn to secrecy. This is how BYU treats professors. Do you think a non-member football coach would put up with such?

Nope. Which is why a Lds recommend holder is the best bet.Gunk wrote: ↑Sat Nov 11, 2017 12:38 pm To the board, I imagine football is little more than a missionary tool. So, yes, I imagine it matters to them that the head coach represent the church and their priorities.

AND why all the whining and complaining about the HC and needing to be a temple recommend holder to be head coach is stupid. BYU is and LDS school, first, foremost and forever. Sports are used as missionary tools, the program has a mission and Bronco pretty well told us what it was.BroncoBot wrote: ↑Sat Nov 11, 2017 2:21 pmNope. As for Anae ... having recently talked to some former BYU players who played for Bronco, there wasn't much love or respect there for Anae. I don't see it happening. If Kalani is let go ... it will be a tough position to fill.

That would be iffy coaching experience. Let's see what he can do with a D1 program instead of a 45 player semi-pro team.a1247 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 10, 2017 9:21 pm He HAS been coaching that's the reason I brought his name up in the first place

45 semi pro players who all played college football. He's more qualified through professional experience then the current receivers and running backs coaches.Fido wrote: ↑Tue Nov 14, 2017 8:03 pmThat would be iffy coaching experience.
