I'm blaming the heat. I heard it was just awful out there.

Both teams played in the heat and yet our offense got physically dominated by an fcs team.

My takeaways from the game:

1. First games are notoriously bad. There were a lot of mistakes. The team didn't look like they thought PSU would be much of a challenge and played down to their competition. It isn't uncommon. This may actually be the best result to ensure they play much better this week.

2. It was scorching hot in the stands and even more so on the field. BYU was safe all game because PSU only had a little success running to the edge, and passing to the TE over the middle. The QB could not pass accurately deep or to the outside. Defense was fairly solid and the PSU offense got away with a ton of holding.

3. BYU fans can be embarrassing at times. First of all, football knowledge is extremely lacking for some. If you don't know what a safety is, please don't shout at the referee that the play should have been a safety. And try to be a little objective. On the TE fade pass in the end zone the fans started booing on what was clearly a good, clean play to break up the pass.

4. We aren't as bad as the first game might insinuate.

5. I didn't see anything that said special season, but that doesn't mean it won't happen this year.

However, if the offense doesn't improve this season, the honeymoon will be over. I'm still holding out hope, but I remember watching one game last year, where the commentator was making pre snap reads on our offense and basically correctly predicting what would happen almost 100% of the time. Not a good sign.
Maybe hiring an entire coaching staff of legendary former players instead of experienced proven D1 coach's might not have been the best idea.

Alabama has a ton of legendary former players and there coaching staff isn't full of them. Instead they hire tried and true coaches with a wealth of knowledge and experience coaching D1 football.

I want Detmer to succeed but the product he's put out on the field last year and then again today isn't good enough.

The best coaches in the game adapt. Is Detmer willing and able to adapt and come up with an offense and scheme that is better then what we all had to sit through today.
Other than Detmer, I guess I'll question the "legendary" term. Beyond that ... I agree. Former BYU players are great, I love 'em ... but that doesn't make them a coach. Mahe ... weak and dumb as coach. Empey isn't delivering a powerful line. Cahoon is letting us down.

The biggest disappointment is the biggest name of them all. I LOVE Ty ... I don't love his offense.

This could be a VERY long year.

Thanks Cougarfan, for a little optimism.

Well that didn't take long. 1 game into season 2 under detmer and people are already grumbling. Are we going to be calling for his job after game 2?

The grumbling was well deserved. Just because he is who he is doesn't mean he should get a free pass. Last years offense wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire and Saturday's game left most people disappointed.

Things that went well:
No offensive turn-overs.
El Bakri is a good blocker out of the backfield. I wish he'd have a couple of passes thrown his way.
Defense allowed only one score, but they should have had a couple more turn-overs.

Penalties on both sides of the ball caused problems. The chop blocking calls cost at least one score, and late hit out-of-bounds gave PSU their only score.

Watching the game again ... I am slightly less pessimistic than I was. Thoughts on Vacouvercougar's thoughts:

1) No offensive turn-overs. First all turn-overs that go against us are "offensive" ( see what I did there?) ... BUT, I couldn't agree more. Ball security is important, and that was a very good stat.

2) I'm surprised: El Bakri and his back-up (Richardson) are both pretty solid. From what I hear, Richardson has the better hands. I had heard that Ty was planning to use the FB as a receiver more ... remember those LaVell years where the FB would block quick and then slide out to the flat? Yeah, that's what I understood they would be doing more ... they did more of that in the Spring Scrimmage, so I'm hoping it is in their packages for LSU. Could be a real nice addition to give Mangum that one more outlet.

3) Defense ... allowed one score against a poor offense. Gave up big 3rd and 4th downs. Played fair ... but if they look like that against LSU, they will get lit up. Played just well enough for hope.

4) Chop blocks. Oh c'mon guys! You have been playing this game for a long time!!! You know better than that! They HURT. Penalties have been a problem ... MUST get those under control

Now that I look back at what I wrote ... I must still feel somewhat pessimistic. I want my blue goggles back ...
