"Open competition" for Starting QB

Post by snoscythe »

Kalani said today it is an "open competition" between Hoge, Critchlow, and Wilstead for the starting spot at this point.

That's how low this coaching staff has sunk. They are contemplating pulling the redshirt off of Wilstead at 2-8 for the last 3 games of a dump-fire season...

Which actually isn't a bad idea if he's going to be our best option for QB next September. Get him some live snaps now, and still have three full seasons ahead of him

You think that limiting someone's options for this season will help? Anyone who wants to earn it can ... that would be a good thing, at least in my mind.

The Cougars have been practicing since August and the coaches don't know who their best QB is yet?
The fact that the coaches would even contemplate burning Wilstead's redshirt this late in the season (3 games left) when no bowl game is a certainty, and Hoge and Critchlow each hasn't seen much playing time, shows how much the coaches are feeling the heat about their jobs.

As long as Wilstead goes in to this understanding he is losing a year, a year in which he could save and start the whole year and put up big numbers. If he's willing to sacrifice 25% of his career than so be it.

The problem is, none of these guys are going to make a difference. The receivers are still the same, the RB's are still the same, the defense is still the same, the coaches are still the same. Burning Wilstead's redshirt would be nothing more than a waste of time and it might even get him injured.

Then again, maybe it helps keep him from transferring to a better team!

Genuinely floored by the "open competition" comments that Kalani made. Wilstead should not even SNIFF the field. Funny that Kalani is suddenly pointing fingers in all directions now that his seat is getting a little hotter. He even poked fun of the sacred fans (remember when Bronco was crucified for suggesting that the fans don't really know much) stating sarcastically that he could ask a fan if he needed advice.

Kalani, your laid back, try to be friends to everyone, don't require discipline ways are catching up to you my friend! I'm still hoping you turn this turd around and drive it into the sunset, but I'm losing faith!

I don't know how many people had an actual "25% of their career" their freshman year. I can't think of a single person who started in 100% of their freshman year games.

My bigger concern would be that Wilstead has not been terribly involved with the playbook this season as he's been running the scout team. That's the year he'll lose -- a year of involvement with the actual offensive philosophy of this offense.

Then again, if he beats out Critchlow and Hoge with that limited exposure.....
