Jamaal Williams article on Bleacher Report

Post by snoscythe »

Article is about his uncle as much as it is about Jamaal, but it's informative as to Jamaal's experience at BYU as a non-LDS African-American. Very worthy read.

I found it very odd that the article didn't mention Luke Neal's son at all.

This article talks about how he tried to mentor his son:

And this article talks about his son's signing day which was crazy:

Article seemed upset that Jamaal didn't like partying. He's a black, non-LDS kid who is not longer at BYU. He should be out drinking and sexing it up. But he's not. He's no fun. BYU killed all the fun out of him.

I didn't like it.

I found the article enlightening. It's always interesting to hear of people's perspectives. My thoughts:

1) We all figured Jamaal took the year off due to HC reasons, but I applaud BYU for once not running it up the flag pole to make an example out of an athlete.

2) I have even more respect for Jamaal for coming back. It certainly could have gotten left out of the article, but it didn't sound like Jamaal got much support from Bronco while he sat out for a year. Kind of sounded like he was hung out to dry. Could have been Jamaal retreating.

3) Jamaal certainly violated the HC. What bothers me, though, is he was basically tattled on. I hate that about BYU's culture. I knew BYU students that made mistakes or made little effort to adhere to the HC. I didn't tattle on them. Their decisions are their own business. If I had an issue with a roommate, I discussed it with the roommate. Sadly, there are a lot of students who rather than confront and resolve issues directly with people, resort to telling a bishop and dumping the issue on the bishop or HC office to resolve.

4) I thought it was funny how Jamaal describes BYU students as robots. Kinda true. The koolaid is thick in Provo.

5) Interesting that Jamaal describes Bronco more as a preacher than a coach. Many on this forum have suspected as much.

6) Kudos to Mahe and the new staff. Sounds like there are/were actual relationships between Jamaal and the new staff. Now, how much of that is Jamaal writing off Bronco, who knows, as Jamaal clearly states he has trust issues.

7) I think the whole, "Do you have anything you want to tell us," approach to soliciting a confession from someone is so stupid. "Ummm...No. I don't have a thing I want to tell you. If I did, I would tell you."

8) The article is clearly trying to knock BYU and the HC.

9) I wish Jamaal luck. I hope we get to see him play on Sundays in the NFL.
