Note LSU usually starts seasons slowly and their defense ramps up through the SEC schedule.

The only reason we are facing LSU in week 1 is because we agreed to meet them in the Advocare Texas Kickoff in NRG Stadium in Houston. I doubt BYU had any ability to move that date 1) because they don't have that kind of influence over this event and 2) the venue is home of the Houston Texans and mid-August they begin their NFL pre-season games.

I know it wasn't BYU's call. It just seems like BYU vs LSU a week before the season really starts would have gotten the guys at ESPN to pull some strings. Oh well.

Rumor is that we might have a change to the schedule. Possibly UMass for the first game for tv.

With the release of the MWC schedule these changes are noted:
Friday, October 6 Boise State at BYU, 8:15 p.m. MT ESPN ** Was on Saturday, Oct 7.

That move actually works well on the schedule. We have a week 4 bye, followed by Utah State on Friday, Sep 29 (general conference weekend), then have a full week to prepare for Boise State on Friday, October 6. Then our following game is Mississippi State on Saturday Oct 14, so we don't lose any preparation days with the Friday games.

I love that we have the FCS game to start the season. We will be dying for BYU football after the long offseason, so we can look past the opponent. And, we get a glimpse at the entire roster, because the 2nd and 3rd strings are likely to get playing time. It also gives us a warm-up game before LSU. And, it's always nice to get a nice, easy win to flip what might have been a 1-2 start to a 2-2 start.

Of course, we would all prefer to play Wisconsin in October and the Ewetes during Thanksgiving weekend, but that's not realistic.

I hope the next evolution for BYU's schedule is to start paying for another one-and-done payday game - but FBS-level, like the Big Boys...against a CUSA, Sun Belt, MAC, or even MWC school. We should look to stack the schedule more in our favor and get 7 home games.

A date change and some updated TV info were released today:

-UNR moved to Friday night (the 10th) for an ESPN2 slot.
-Fresno State game will have ESPN carriage (network and time TBD)
-USU game will be on CBSSN with a 6:30 kick
-Hawaii game will also be on CBSSN with a 8pm MT (4pm Hawaii) kick
