Style of Play Course Corrections Needed

Post by byucougar1 »

Couple of thoughts after reviewing the game:

BYU has been the benficiary of the hand check rule early in the season. Going to the rim hard and getting handcheck/bodycheck fouls called or keeping them from happening allowed them to score many layups or short jumpers. They did not get these calls recently vs the physical/athletic teams (UMass, ISU, WSU and yes, Utah). When they did get the calls, the lack of high percentage FT shooting failed to convert to points. Against Utah, they left 14 points off the board with missed FTs. Our worst FT shooters, are typically the ones that also draw the fouls (KC, FB1V and Mika). This deficiency must be corrected soon.

We lack consistent 3 point shooters in order to play a good inside/outside game. When Carlino is off, the only other person to pick up the slack is Haws. Teams tend to double-down on him, or get an athletic/physical player to push him around and harrass him length.

This team does not presently have a half court offense set. If they aren't running the fast break or the transition game, they have trouble distributing the ball around the perimeter or inside/outside to get good shots. This also needs to improve and the shooters need to step up and help the bigs out when they are double-teamed down low.

Guards need to stop the dribble penetration as Mika/Austin are forced to pick up guys slashing to the basket, and they often end up with ticky-tack fouls. We have no frontcourt depth without Austin and Mika (both need to be on the court together to keep the double-team from happening).

If improved FT shooting and defensive minded presence can be instilled in the players, they can shore up some of the obvious weaknesses that other teams can presently exploit.
