Moving to Memphis

Post by Schmoe »

Hey guys, long time no see! ;)

I've recently accepted a job near Memphis, TN and was wondering if anyone on the board had any experience with that area? Neighborhoods/schools to avoid or to look for, things to do with the family, bbq that must be tried, etc.

I'll be working on the southeast side of the city and have mostly been looking at homes in Collierville and Olive Branch, MS.

I'm just a regular, everyday normal guy,
I can't afford a car, I use public transportation,
I don't mind, I read till I reach my destination,
sometimes a newspaper, sometimes a book,
the money I save, this stuff is off the hook,

You're moving to the South? But no one there likes barbeque!

Graceland is really cool, but the neighborhood is very sketchy. Check out Mud Island in the middle of the Mississippi River. It's fantastic and has an awesome replica of the entirety of the river.

Beale St is a drunk's paradise with probably 20+ bars in just a few blocks.

Arlington and Atoka are nice areas if your job is in the north. The temple is slightly north of Memphis. It is good to avoid living in Shelby County. Collierville was a nice place when I was there until 2009. Shelby farm is a great place to visit because it has walking trails, mountain biking, and bison. I liked day trips to Shiloh Battlefield and three day weekend trips to St. Louis and the Gulf. There are a lot of opportunities to serve in disaster relief efforts. Congratulations!
