Rose's recruiting. Does anyone else see kind of a hole right before and at the beginning of the transition to the WCC? Keep in mind because of missions that the effect of recruiting classes is usually 2-3 years delayed for us. The quality picked up in a big way after 2012 and the delay means we're just starting to see the result. I don't think 8-9 games into this is time to panic yet. Certainly the Colorado game was encouraging because I think Haws at least seemed to have found the right mental formula moving forward. We'll see how the Illinois game goes.

2011/2012 seem like rough years looking back.

A couple of recruiting classes in a row that really didn't work out at all. With missions, we're just coming out of the result of it and just barely starting to benefit from the very good classes of 2013-2016. We'll see what happens this Saturday, but after a rough start I really think Haws' improvement over the last 2-3 games is a very good sign that we will still be good this year.

Quick look ahead to the 2017-18 basketball roster:

OUT (Opens 2 scholarship spots)
F Kyle Davis (graduation)
G L.J. Rose (graduation)

Returning players
Jamal Aytes F Senior
Steven Beo G Sophomore
Elijah Bryant G Junior
Yoeli Childs F Sophomore
Payton Dastrup F Sophomore
Nick Emery G Junior
Zach Frampton G Sophomore (walk-on)
Davin Guinn F Senior
TJ Haws G Sophomore
Corbin Kaufusi C Senior (football scholarship)
Colby Leifson G Sophomore
Eric Mika F Junior
Braiden Shaw F Junior

Returning from missions
Ryan Andrus F/C Sophomore
Dalton Nixon F/C Sophomore
Luke Worthington F/C Junior

Potential incoming freshman (verbal commit)
Christian PoPoola, Jr. G Freshman

With potentially 4 players joining next year's team and only 2 scholarship players leaving there will again be a scholarship crunch. There has also been talk of looking for a JC transfer so it can only be assumed there will be some more defections from this list.

There are rumors that there are some unhappy players (possibly even main starters) who may be looking to transfer. I don't know how legitimate those rumors are, but it seems like there could be a little smoke.

Good. Let's continue the tactic of losing players each off-season due to transfers. That's been a big problem the last several years that is starting to catch up with us big time.

If that's the case, ROse needs to reign em in or cleanse the inner vessel. I think he's lost the team a bit since Jimmer graduated.

Criddle and Mikeli Wesley were talking on the other day about how the team doesn't really have any stand-out recruiting prospects lined up for the next two years because no one wants to come play where the lineup is set and the coaches have run off other players who are now starting at D1 schools to get the current line-up on the floor. The coaches have created the perception that this lineup was set in stone three years ago and is set for at least the next two.

If you're a PG, you don't want to come and back up TJ Haws for three years if you think you can go somewhere else and start right away.

Same for a SG, you don't want to come and back up Nick Emery or Elijah Bryant Haws for two years before you get a fair shot at a starting role.

Same for a PF, you don't want to come and back up Bryant for three years.

And certainly the same for a C, you don't want to come and back up Mika for two years.

What kid who thinks he's good enough to start on a D1 team is going to be excited about coming to BYU the next two years except for blue-goggled lifers when everyone wants to come and start from Day 1?

No one. The only boost I really see is Dalton Nixon, but he's either got to be 6th man or Rose is going to have to demote one of the Flawless Five to get him on the floor, and there's nothing to indicate (even going back to when they were recruited) that Rose would take that step with his golden children.

Sounds like he already lost several players if he's got concerns about who wants to be here and work hard.

Sounds like several don't want to be here and don't want to work hard.
